We also found that the lack of clarity about how to identify and describe a #DesignatedCommunity was a source of risk because it created opportunities for stakeholders in the audit process to justify sub-optimal preservation policies and practices. #ISO16363 #TRAC

I'm excited to share with y'all that Laura Rothfritz & I have an article in the Journal of Documentation "Designated Community: uncertainty and risk"
Here: https://doi.org/10.1108/JD-07-2022-0161
And #OpenAccess at: https://trace.tennessee.edu/utk_infosciepubs/467/
In this article we find that uncertainty about #DesignatedCommunity in the context of a #TRAC #ISO16363 audit is viewed as a source of risk to digital repositories and their collections.

"Many of the rest have been charged with relatively minor offenses, including traffic violations, according to #TRAC at Syracuse University, which gathers immigration enforcement data."

The US government now monitors a third of a million immigrants using electronic monitoring. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses three types of technologies: SmartLINK (smartphone app), telephonic monitoring (landlines), and GPS ankle monitors. After months of decline, GPS has seen the largest percent growth in the past several weeks. #electronicmonitoring #surveillance #ICE #immigration #data #TRAC

Great to see our data in the news in this latest by Tanvi Misra for The Nation.
“The number of immigrants the government has sought to remove on criminal grounds each year has decreased in the past decade. Still, at least half the people who were deported between 2003 and 2020 had at least one conviction on record, according to TRAC at Syracuse University.”

Always proud to see our work at #TRAC used to ground public debate about #immigration:
"More than 750,000 people are now waiting for the government to review their asylum claims, and the average wait time is more than four years, according to the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University."

Heads up @immigration folks: We have a lot of announcements this Monday and Tuesday regarding updates to #TRAC immigration data. I typically post on Twitter but I’m posting here instead, so if you’re in immigration policy, journalism, or research, you’ll get my highlights here and a full run-down on Substack.

We have completely redesigned our immigration tools page at #TRAC to be more user-friendly and work better on mobile devices. @immigration

If you’re new to following me on social media, I’m a researcher at the nation’s clearinghouse for #immigration #data, which serves as the foundation for tons of news and #research. And I tend to share updates to this work, so if you’re into that, feel free to follow and chat.

Listening half-shocked half-not-at-all-shocked to hear @benjaminwittes talk on @lawfare about DHS treating him as the subject of an intelligence report, followed by the agency withholding information under the pretense of #FOIA exemptions (b7E). We sue the government (specifically DHS) often at #TRAC and, yeah, they are not honest players in the transparency game.
I’m grateful for the hospitality of friends and colleagues in San Diego and Tijuana this past week while I was doing fieldwork in the region on the border and the refugee system. I was also fortunate to get to duck into this coffee shop (Moniker) to type up my fieldnotes.

Russians have come to the US as #asylum seekers in higher numbers since the start of the Ukrainian war (and even before). After hearing about this from immigration advocates in #Tijuana (& seeing it for myself), I decided to look at our #data, which does show a significant increase in Russians who are inadmissible (i.e. lack travel documents to the US) encountered at ports of entry, mainly San Diego. #refugees #immigration #TRAC
