Dreamed that I was on a long bus ride out of town to meet an old friend from high school. During the ride I wrote a handful of old school IDM beats (a mode of music making that I cut my teeth on and scratched my head about for years, but ultimately left behind in my 20s). The morning after I arrived I was playing them back and was surprised at how far I'd come. Tracks that used to be awkward & difficult to finish were now easy to bang out & felt graceful and fluent.

I am deeply enamored with the stupid drum pattern I have going on in the second section.

* FL Studio Mobile: probably the most capable app I have. Can’t change time signature after project is created, which sucks.
* GarageBand: only dabbled with it a bit so far. Seems nice but might hold your hand a bit too much for my tastes.
* DefleMask: capable tracker, relatively good UX. Limited, but for good reason (it’s chiptune-specific)
* SunVox: amazingly powerful, baffling UX, not great w/touch-only interface

(SunVox is a multi-platform #tracker, and according to the docs you use the Insert key to add notes, which isn’t at all helpful when using a touch interface. I can pull out my Bluetooth keyboard… but I don’t wanna 😆)

So I had preordered a DirtyWave M8 handheld tracker some aeons ago and it arrived last weekend.

The UI and workflow have been a challenge since i'm not used to LSDJ-likes, but hot damn, those synth engines are absolutely fire.

Look at all the fun sounds that are coming out of this -- per-tick tables are incredible.

The Polyend was easier to pick up but the amount of power in my pocket is just absolutely wild
