I'm usually all about pointing out differences between cultivars, but today I noticed this shelf and coudln't believe how similar these four plants looked - I hadn't considered any of them to be particular lookalikes before. 10 points for each one you can correctly identify π€£
Giant leaves on T. zebrina 'Deep Purple'! In the right conditions I find this cultivar gets bigger leaves than any other zebrina.

My seedling from #Tradescantia zebrina 'Little Hill' is doing well!

I've never seen my T. cerinthoides 'Red Hill' get this big before π
New article! Explaining why "how many varieties of tradescantia are there?" is a complicated question... and doing my best to answer it anyway.

Flowers from the Continental Group seem to have a pretty low success rate π
Several of mine have been flowering for weeks, and I've been pollinating all the open flowers I see every day. But these are all the dead flower heads I pulled off today that had failed to form seeds. I've had *two* actual seeds out of all those flowers so far! But one of them is already germinating, so... π€

Tradescantia is known for being a bit of a weed, however if you fill an old sauce bottle with water and the tiniest pinch of fertiliser, sprigs of it will happily grow on your windowsill.
You can use mint if you like.
Keep out of the sun though, bottles left in the sun might accidentally start a fire.

These T. pallida seedlings are getting big enough to start showing some adult colours, and I'm really impressed by how much variation there is!
They're all from seeds of 'Purpurea', but pollinated by unknown cultivars. They're still so young, I'm really excited to see what other subtleties show up as they grow.
It's time for the vote! Head to the survey to give your input on the name for this T. pallida cultivar: https://forms.gle/MJJZ1GbQysLuTX5G7
I pared down the suggestions a bit, so don't be too sad if yours isn't in the list - there's also a free text box so feel free to stage a write-in campaign π
Lots of new listings added to etsy!

Some individual cuttings, including a few unusual ones - reverted 'Unicorn' from the Continental Group (has big strong green leaves and often makes random spots of variegation), T. hirta 'Swifttale' (weird grassy foliage and big pink flowers), and T. pallida 'Shadow Hill' (greyish-purple leaves with very pale undersides and narrow-petalled flowers).
The new Tradescantia cultivar registrations from 2022 have been published in the RHS Cultivar Registration Bulletin!
You can view the bulletin online here: https://fliphtml5.com/bookcase/hyezs (go to issue 2, 2022 - tradescantias start on page 26).
Fifteen of my T. pallida 'Purpurea' seeds have germinated so far. The biggest one is just developing its second leaf π₯Ί
The pollen parents are unknown, but could be any of several other pallida cultivars that were flowing at the same time. The seedlings already seem to be showing a bit of variation in shape and colour π
I've noticed that T. pallida 'Kartuz Giant' often makes these dead-end stems (not a technical term π ).
The base of the leaf is fused into a tube, and there seems to be no more terminal growth point - both these examples have started spontaneously making branches lower down instead. My pet theory is the tubular growth is an extreme case of the mutation which causes the really wide leaves π€
