Does the Trader’s State of Mind really matter?

I have heard this argued both ways. It is argued that the trader’s state of mind, or more formally, the psychology of a trader, is less critical for success in a world of algorithmic trading. It is also argued that a trader’s state of mind is the most critical factor in a trader's success…period.

Surveys of professional and independent traders show only about 25% are able to frame trading losses in a way that allows them to maximize the statistical edge of their trading strategies. The rest care about the outcome of each and every trade. This is often because the outcome of the current trade reflects on their dreams, their hopes and their worthiness as an individual.
