The picture shows an Oiran, which was the highest-ranking courtesan in the Edo Period.
Oiran were not classic prostitutes as we know them today. You could not book them directly, but had to go through a middleman. You had to book three highly paid meetings where there was no physical contact, but you were only judged by her from a distance.
