As a child growing up Catholic, we celebrated both Christmas and St. Nicholas day. On the eve of St Nicholas day (December 5th), we hung a small stocking, which the next morning was filled with treats and small things left by the Saint.

On the other hand, Christmas was Jesus’ birthday, and the day Santa Claus came with presents.

Was this just a family tradition, or was it a bigger thing? I’ve always wondered but never asked.
