@capntransit dirty industry secret: if you plan for 2/5 or 3/5 of cars to disappear, they disappear, congestion pricing or not. | are just two sides of the same coin.

In , @henrygrabar reminds us that several ITE leaders have denounced how its parking demand estimates have been used.

“We expected you to be smart!” says one former VP.

“Nobody on the ground knows ITE has changed their tune,” adds Daniel McKenna-Foster.

"This is the standard method that the Netherlands uses to prevent people from driving through a neighborhood, and they make the streets safer and more enjoyable for everyone who lives there."

Also basically the only solution to traffic, and will still be the answer, no matter how much time we waste wishing for some other option.

A8 @carolski is an amazing 3-month-long thing but the picture I have from this ride shows a poorly-designed / design (shoulda had a shared central lane narrower than 2.5 car widths) with door-zone lane outside of parking and a car parked in the way for the cherry on top.

My 12yo is waging a protest against gravity being hard, I mean I totally understand how PBOT and our entire city govt is institutionally wishing cars would pay full price but be cheap and the streets would be empty like a car commercial but bustling with economic activity, and all of it electric & powered by cinnamon-scented .

Florida's guidance tells road designers how to translate context into target speeds, including transitions through rural town centers.

It also tells local governments what their built environment should look like.

Traditionally, speed limits were set based on how fast the top 15% of drivers travel. State agencies in Minnesota, Massachusetts, Washington, and others are leaning into new approaches that prioritize safety and speed management. ssti.us/2023/05/30/state-dots-

On Twitter, @boenau points out the AASHTO Green Book is more flexible than some road designers seem to think. twitter.com/Boenau/status/1661

But a 2010 article found:

30 states require wider lanes than in the Green Book.

9 require a larger minimum turning radius.

12 require design speeds 5-10mph above the speed limit. t.co/kRBLdd5hYZ

Chicago reached a deal with the IDOT to use design vehicles smaller than 65'. illinois.gov/news/press-releas

"choosing speed and convenience for automobiles" is such a silly way to state the trade-off made by to preserve . I suppose it's convenient for cars / carmakers that engineers constantly choose speed, but none of these anti-ped/bike/transit decisions will ever bring convenience to drivers. (Also these cities aren't so conservative, they just have broken voting methods that let the newspaper & business ass. pick the winner)

@dr2chase I think the third chart here (deaths per ) is more significant and actionable than per population or per vehicle. How much we drive or how much we're coerced/compelled to own cars can be influenced by land use, parking, tax, and subsidies, but the deaths per mile driven reflects the fallacies of our standards and design manuals (and to some extent, the racist gun-fetishist thuggery of our traffic enforcement.)

@wackomedia ...and more stores could fill in between sooner, transit could run more frequently. All of this is being blocked by "standards", which preserves space for oversized vehicles by design (and contrary to what they would have you believe, this is at the discretion of the Engineer, as the manual says.) The politics of cheap/free parking and gas subsidies is inter-generational theft, cars need to pay their way, .

@wackomedia how about yellow centerlines? Plenty of Portland streets without sidewalks definitely have them, standards being what they are. I say we can't afford to create for 4000 cars per day if we can't afford sidewalks, but we need elected officials or a judge to say it. , , fiscal solvency, etc

When you flip to some page in the handbook, count cars and multiply by the number in the table, without accounting for conditions on the ground and in terms of bike/walk network connectivity, you conclude that two lanes and a left turn pocket are "needed" despite lack of bike lane or sidewalk, somebody is going to get killed.

@ObbieZ too often and unpredictably to require some reservation or logistics, to even get to the nearest car rental place without a car requires overcoming a couple miles of the state highway department's / coercion of maintaining deadly 5-lane stroads through the city.
