Something I noticed when I lived in was that some things are heavily subsidized to the point of being essentially free, but almost nothing is ever *entirely* free. MRT and bus fares, for example, are very cheap. An hour-long, cross-island trip across 20+ stops on the MRT metro costs SGD $2.13 today, or about USD $1.50 (even less for students or people with various concession passes). Last time I was there, this practice of charging some tiny amount for something that is basically free is used pretty often. Basic medicine is free under a socialized healthcare system, but everyone is charged a couple of bucks per prescription anyway.

I suspect this is a psychological trick to prevent a . The perceived difference between $0 and $1 is HUGE, because the latter is no longer “free”, and therefore scarce. Charging even a tiny amount probably helps to prevent systemic abuse.

The argument that small contributions to the global atmospheric carbon load is not sufficient to affect the trajectory of climate change was shot down in Montana last week. In her ruling, Judge Seeley said, “Each additional ton of [greenhouse gas] emitted into the atmosphere exacerbates the impact on climate.”

Here's my take on the ruling.

You've probably heard of the "," which claims to be a "realist" account of what happens when people try to share something - a park, a beach, a forest - without anyone owning it. According to the "tragedy," these commons are inevitably ruined by "rational" actors who know that if they don't overgraze, pollute or despoil, someone else will, so they might as well get there first.

Isn't this a perfect, modern example for the tragedy of the commons phenomenon?

"That is the conundrum we face: The individual’s decision to be armed feels rational, maybe is rational, but the societal sum of all those individual decisions is madness."

In the 1990 the internet was fun, full of smart asses saying hey look what I can do.
But still fun.
Then it was invaded by cattle barons, and their sales teams, and became a perfect example of the Tragedy of the Commons.
Check it out. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_

PS: why are we using a valuable global resource for a/v that any modern device could store enough of for a month? Or a year?

At the same time, wild-caught fish consumption seems largely unsustainable.

Theoretically, I imagine, factory-farmed fish could be environmentally positive, could be healthy, perhaps even reducing content from our fillets.

Unfortunately, I suspect this is not seen as a profitable model, for reasons ranging from consumer preferences to the .

ChatGPT and other AI tools will soon destroy the existing Internet ecosystem by depleting its resources, such as high-quality content, without returning anything to the content creators. It's another case of the "Tragedy of the Commons," where individuals use a shared resource to the point of depletion, with irreparable damage to the community. Read the short doc below.

I am thinking (one has time, when on sick-leave ;-) ): Is there a list of institutions, which employ designated data stewards and/or a list of those who do not?

Data stewards, ultimately, have a staff position, caught between chairs. Such positions are at times simply not funded, because there is no money and faculty does not give money for this common goal (variety of ).

A little bit of public pressure might help ...

Every time the funding woes of a FLOSS project (this time, it's <matrix.org/blog/2022/12/25/the>) come up, people are ready to frame it as —an expression I don't like because, aside from being historically inaccurate at best, it focuses on the _wrong_ side of the issue (the commons) rather than on the actual source of the problem: valuing immediate self-interest over long-term sustainability. Can we start calling it the instead?

Are some governments disconnected from reality?

A day out where I live (Cumbria, England) will inform anyone that the culture is busy burning fossil fuels: diesel, petrol, kerosene & gas. Also, busy burning wood.

People are busy filling up their vehicles with fossil fuels. Diesel truck drivers are busy delivering diesel and petrol to the fuel stations.

Diesel truck drivers are busy delivering kerosene to people's homes & workplaces.

Diesel truck drivers are busy delivering coal to people's homes.

Diesel digger drivers are busy chopping down trees - other diesel truck drivers are busy delivering that wood to the sawmills.

Diesel truck drivers are busy delivering woodfuel to people's homes.

So, when England's government appears to want (again) to do something about climate heating by reducing Carbon Dioxide emissions - fundamentally, evidently, that is a con trick. That's how con tricks work - they offer something people want ("climate blah blah" virtue signaling), but that is a lie to cover up the truth.

Obviously, the UK's party government has had many years in . How much of those years have been spent the public & propping up the fuel industries - is all the years they have been in government. To all extents - the conservative party is the fuel industries.

The UK's conservative party is the cause of so much ecological degradation (inc. wildlife extinction). Their true slogan should be "we are only the greenwashing, ecologically unsustainable, & polluting business party".

But, that phrase is a little bit too wordy for the public. So instead, the UK's conservative party uses slogans such as "Greenest government ever!". And that slogan seems to be enough for all the busy people burning fuels, to vote for governments that support the busy destruction of their environments.

The cultural grave should have the words "its only business" scribed on the headstone.

What a crazy tragedy of the commons.

Great thread, Possum! Thank you.

Not an econ-wiz myself, I had only heard of it but didn't know what it meant,

Thought: The commons can be governed democratically and sustainability can be policed / enforced. The fact that it isn't, but instead CEO run amok as suicidal tyrants, is tragic.

Yet, a single bad actor CAN indeed over time change a well-meant system, democracy itself, too: the Biz Conduct of most🇩🇪 🇬🇧 🇺🇸 politicians today is (semi-)corrupt.
