Unfortunately one of our crew succumbed to breathing issues, nausea, and loss of mobility and had to be air lifted out to a hospital. We’re wrapping up early now. Rough day, hot again above the clouds.

Pretty cloud inversion on both sides of the mountain stayed all morning. Gone now and hot! We’ve covered almost 1/2 of a mile (all brushing, no time for treading) in 5 and a half hours. Please volunteer if you use any trails 🙏

Plan worked. Windshield got smashed because PCT trailhead was washed out and overrun by illegal dirt bikes. So:

1) Fixed the road to the trailhead and posted on Next Door

2) Filled the trail register with PCT pins and shared on Strava and Next Door

3) Moved my midweek runs to that trail to beat everyone’s Strava segments and warm up the heat map

AND: It worked, I got a Strava notification that there’s a hot trail in town that I should go check out 😎

This is my volunteer trail crew chief. He’s 70 something. Not sure what it’s called, but he’s made of that battleship hull material? You can’t keep up, trust me.

The best part about being connected with your local volunteer trail maintenance crew is you’ve “got someone”.

I’m out there anywhere and there’s a tree down across the trail? I got someone. I can txt a pic and that tree will be added to the next project application (or someone will renegade it overnight).

It’s awesome, even better if you go work the project. Then the next time you’re out, the trail is pristine and you’re like “I did that”.

Fun PCT run over the hill to the next canyon and back. Scouting for my trail maintenance crew. We need condition reports for project permit applications (water damage from storms, not pictured).

Trail Gorillas handle the bottom 500 miles of PCT. We’re the Angeles National Forest chapter (Section D and half E, ~Wrightwood to Hikertown). Recommend trail runners find their local volunteer group and at minimum scout for them, it’s very satisfying.

Jogged up trail to do some renegade #PCT trail work. I’m removing all the slough and berm to make it less attractive to illegal riders. The rider that fucked with me (broke my windshield) is slowly learning my capacity to be their worst enemy.

Taking a break, been at it over 6 hours. I’m past half done, filled a couple big trenches, widened the road, cut some brush from the sides so people can go wide and not scratch. I’ll rest and snack and do some more, then come back and finish tomorrow. Trailhead parking will be much more accessible now.

I want to go see snow in the Sierra, I want to go climb snow in the San Gabriels, but I need to help this trailhead in town.

The roadway into the trailhead parking is a mess, few cars are going up, so the #PCT here is getting overrun by motorcyclists (even had my windshield smashed last weekend).

I love this trail. I’ve lived on it for 13 years since I moved to this town it passes through. I run on it year round, volunteer on it, maintain it, and help hikers on it. It’s how these things work.

So my #Strava looks like I died last month (sacroiliac injury from digging a ditch while #volunteering for #TrailMaintenance on the #PacificCrestTrail ). Which basically I did inside because #NotRunningSucks

This spot has needed attention for years and I've always been too lazy to address it. Some Trail Gnomes have been through since the last time I was here.
