This canyon once saw the passing wagon trains of the emigrants as they made their way from Saint Louis, MO over into California from 1844-1850. Due to the winding river, there was over 20 crossings the wagons had to make. Lockwood Loop is near one such historic crossing.
An organization named Trails West has set railroad rails in the shape of Ts with informative plaques on them along the entire length of the multiple emigrant trails that crossed the West.
