Doing a #trainday-and-a-half as a finisher on the last couple of #bicycleday - in the end we did a one-way trip of cycling basically Amsterdam-Utrecht-Arnhem-Apeldoorn (and then train back), which took us through a lot of what the Netherlands has to offer, both in terms of farmland on and off polders, following the lower Rhine for a bit, and a lot of forest and heath in what passes for 'hilly' areas there. Lovely trip all around, with some stellar B&B experiences overall.
Getting norther and norther, and it's getting both more 3D and more pretty #trainday
I have been incredibly tired this #trainday, hence quite little posting today. Southern Sweden is quite beautiful this time of year, and especially the Småland highlands is so similar to my home region that I get _even more_ homesick..
We've made it to Stockholm now, anyway, and are occupying a table at one of the cafes for the next hour or so.
And then on with the last train.
Sweden has a lot of single-track railway, meaning there's a fair bit of starting and stopping and waiting for passing trains in the other direction, depending on your trains' priority. I think this is much less of a thing down on the continent. #trainday
The second #trainday begins in Swedish 2D country - Scania, on a train under rearrangement. After some shenanigans on Malmö central station, we're underway towards Stockholm, where we'll arrive at around 1430 this afternoon. For now, it's fields and breakfast.
Have now spent an ungodly amount of time at Hamburg Hbf, practicing trombone a bit (with a practice mute, on a semi-empty platform), eating a second dinner (indian good at the food court, decent) and generally wasting time. Train is coming. Eventually. #trainday one is almost over.
Hello Frankfurt!
In other news, downloading videos to watch together ahead of time was definitely a good idea (watching Philosophytube's latest), and using a Pulseaudio combine sink is relatively straightforward once you learn what CLI commands to use (I maintain that it's a bad system tho), so listening in two pairs of headphones is Easy(tm) (one wired, one Bluetooth). We Keep getting more and more delayed though. 43 minutes now... #trainday
The change in Basel turned out to be surprisingly stressful as well! Mostly because in addition to changing trains, we also wanted to get some lunch, as well as a adapter from europlug to swiss plug... In the end we managed, and now sit on the train we're sitting on for the next 6.5 hours or so.
Goodbye Switzerland! It's been a weird two years, and you're a weird country, but I'm happy I got to know you!
After Olten, tunnels.... Not only, but starting with a pretty long one, and there's more before Basel if my map reading skills are good enough. Such is life in a 3D country. #trainday
Already in Olten! Some nice views on the way, but hard to catch on camera since they were generally quite fleeting. Instead I'll give you the roll in to Olten station. #trainday
In other news, travelling first class means you get someone asking if you want coffee in your seat, and then a bill for 5CHF if you accept. I am not used to travelling first class. #trainday
The track from Bern to Olten so far is many tunnels and walled sides of the highway, or through forests. I think it's a new, faster track though, meaning we can just blast on at however many km/h instead of needing to account for regional trains and stations. Convenient, if not as picturesque! #trainday
Getting closer to Bern and the views are more and more obscured by forests and walls. A more folded landscape too. #trainday
Some more pics of the views on the way to Fribourg. I really am going to miss the brilliant train network here. #trainday
The rolling hills between Lac Léman and Fribourg is also beautiful in their own way. The train tracks often have a good view here. #trainday
