August marked the busiest month in #Edinburgh #Trams’ history - recording 1.2 million journey - keeping the city moving during the fringe & various concerts. The city enjoyed an increased frequency with trams running all-night on weekends instead of terminating at 11pm.

Even wi the extension to Newhaven, line is only long enough for 17 trams at once (up from 12) despite purchasing 27 in 2007 - all that’s left is to build more track & not just in the capital! #transit

Living with illegally high air pollution is worse than smoking. It takes 2.3 years off your life on average, and in some countries as much as 6 years. We have all the solutions we need, and it’s mostly the boring simple stuff: #ElectricBus, #trains, #trams, #ULEZ, banning wood stoves in urban areas, rolling out heat pumps/networks, street trees everywhere, and restricting/banning cars as much as politically possible.

@douginamug Perhaps even regular buses are better than trams. Someone told me that trams can move more people than buses, but it's not obvious to me.

When tram lines were ubiquitous in old Madras Trams were the cheapest mode of transport till mid 20th century In February 1895, the first tram ran between “Power Station, Egmore and Pachaiyappa’s College with two slight halts on the road in 12 minutes”.
On April 11, 1953, the Madras Tramway Company closed officially; leaving 1,650 workers jobless.

Yes. #Trams. That's the actually sustainable, safe and practical option. It's even a mature technology whose main failure modes are well-known and documented (and so can be appropriately handled).

It's not very profitable for grifters though, so that's why you don't see it in America.

Waiting for a 59 tram. I have noticed that when you're at a stop near a terminus, these displays act more like aspirational "serving suggestions" until the tram actually departs. Starting in 1898 and well into the 50ies, #Winterthur had a system of #trams connecting the train station with Wülflingen, Seen, Oberwinterthur and Töss.
