I just finished the audiobook of A Psalm for the Wild-Built, by Becky Chambers. It was a lovely vignette of an inclusive, post-capitalist utopia. But it also painted a refreshing portrait of artificial life that is not bound to computer roots or aspiring to human behavior. It was also a lovely reminder that fiction doesnt have to be long and complicated to be good. It was the first fiction work I enjoyed reading in a long time.

Poetic and hard and hopefully all at once, a beautiful piece of near-future speculative fiction deeply rooted in queer activism and anarchist politics. Would love to reread this one (and then it's sequel) with all my own political growth under the belt.

Gender Queer: A Memoir (Maia Kobabe) – Maia’s autobiographical #graphicnovel is a beautiful rendition of eir experience #gender growing up and coming out (and thus is the target of frequent book bans). I sent this book to my family before coming out as #trans in the hope that seeing a perfectly encapsulated tale of the inner turmoil and challenges would help them understand my own life.

Nevada (Imogen Binnie) – Maria is at a bit of a dead-end working at a NYC bookshop. When she finds out her girlfriend cheated on her, she spends her meagre surgery savings on some drugs and steals her girlfriend’s car for a road trip to the pacific. On her way, she stops in Nevada and meets James, who she identifies as a fellow, but closeted, #trans woman. This is very much a book that doesn’t give a flying shit about cis readers, or indeed any conventions and I love it for it.

Some of the discussions about book bans made me think:

What if, when the fascists were trialing this type of stuff in Hungary (as they have been wont to do), publishers did not capitulate en masse but pushed back?

That did not happen. I know more closely than I would like, as a trans author.

This is kind of sad to contemplate. (I'll be honest, I'm too tired for "infuriating")
