@vk6flab Well, since you asked so nicely 😉 I plugged in the powered-on #transceiver between the two `dmesg` commands (first screen shot), unplugged it, and replugged between the two `lsusb` commands (second screen shot). Same result with two different USB cables, one freshly opened. Many other devices are recognized just fine in that same USB port.

#Transceiver is behaving, at least. I wonder if it had a slightly too intimate #thermal relationship with a USB hub that melted itself a little when I wasn’t looking during a previous operating event. (And if that’s related at all to the dead USB port on the #laptop. But that can be worked around, at least.)

@vk6flab Cable swap suggests it’s not the cable. The #transceiver is supposed to present as a serial device, no adapter needed. One operating system says “whatever you plugged in is malfunctioning,” and the other says “It won’t answer the most basic USB questions.”

I have everything I need for a good #portable #contesting station, I think. Transceiver, logging computer, decent antennas, transmatch...

Wait, I can't do CAT on the #transceiver? Both Linux and Windows think the USB port is malfunctioning?

At least I have a good portable station. At least I'm not planning on very high QSO rates that could actually make the lack of CAT a significant problem.

It was easier than I thought to make that first #C4FM #digital voice contact. Mostly it required finding a #repeater frequency and stepping outside so the HT could actually hit it. Apparently the local repeater is linked up with a bunch of other flavors of digital thanks to the group that operates that repeater and a handful of others, so users of other #codecs could hear us. Now I'm thinking I need a whole VHF/UHF base station at home, not just a dumb-as-dirt 2m-analog-only #transceiver.

I think I’m probably about to drop the change for a Usdx Usdr HF Qrp SDR Transceiver, 8 bands, all modes, around 140$ on the amazon.

Yes it does SSB. Also SDR means I should be able to configure it up with gnu radio companion.

Sending out #APRS from the automobile works a lot better when you find the button that toggles the permission for sending the #beacons. But at least I have proof that the darn thing works. And while I was building that proof, I got a pretty good handle on what area our club’s favorite #repeater covers. Though I should probably find a better place for the #transceiver’s audio output.

@qrper The FT-817 was the best gift that the #volkswagen #dieselgate settlement gave me. Shame to see such a capable #transceiver discontinued. I hope it’s only temporary.

@scy @PattaFeuFeu @homeassistant The #Nooelec XTR sent me down a rabbit hole. The name implies it's a #transceiver but it doesn't actually seem to be. Seems borderline false-advertising tbh.
