I’ve been doing a lot of #transcoding lately. Got an Nvidia card for my #RHEL server, compiled ffmpeg, and am having a blast using other-transcode from @donmelton.

Looking for some advice regarding options for the home media center.

I'm running a NAS that has Plex server happily running on it but I noticed when playing videos on end devices it transcodes often and the transcoding is slow on the NAS which seems to be a common issue.

I'm looking to offload that work. I was thinking of setting up a SFF/MiniITX PC or piece of hardware that does transcoding well and simply install the Plex app and target the Plex server for data. I have a spare GPU I can use already if necessary. I also saw there are devices like the NVIDIA shield. I was thinking for this device it would simply need some GPU w/NVENC or Intel CPU w/QuickSync. Am I missing any options?

If I do go with the SFF/MiniITX build I would need a remote. I was thinking maybe the FLIRC receiver and a legacy remote. Any better options for that?

Lastly does it make sense to skip the Plex server and mount the media directly on either the SFF or NVIDIA Shield, sync the data every so often, and then transcode locally off faster disks? If so is it easy to get a shell or OS-level access on the Shield?

Ya tengo la aceleración por #hardware del #transcoding de vídeo funcionando en el #minipc. Hasta ahora la hacía por software y, claro, cuando le metes bitrates altos, para los que el codec de la televisión se queda corto, eso no tiraba.

Y lo hacía por software por dos razones:

La primera es que el guc/huc no viene activado por defecto. Las inteladas de #intel

Y la segunda es que hay un fallo conocido del #kernel 5.15 que impedía activarlo.

Cuando no está uno al día de estas cosas recorrer los pasos lleva tiempo.

Hello, I’m probably best known as the person who started the #Safari and #WebKit projects at #Apple.

After drawing underground comics in the 70s, I pioneered using the Macintosh for information graphics at newspapers in the 80s.

In the 90s I was a software engineer or manager on Macromind Director, Adobe Illustrator, Netscape Navigator and other projects.

I retired in 2012 to drink, develop video #transcoding software and swear during various podcasts.

Now I'm finally able to stream my #flac music collection via #airsonic as a streaming server.

I'd prefer #funkwhale with their modern UI, but as its still alpha it lacks some functions that are important to me like #transcoding.
That really is handy when it comes to saving mobile data. (Yeah...)
It was quite a mess tho to get flac > ogg transcoding to work with airsonic.

Airsonic isn't that pretty and less modern, but quite stable.
