I was thinking today how #Jesus at the #Transfiguration reminded me of so many super heroes. But really it should be the other way around: Our fictional heroes remind us only in part of the grander glory of God.

"And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain apart. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his garments became white as light." Mt 17:1-2

Two gospel readings this week! John 3:1-17 (Jesus has a night meeting with #nicodemus and discusses what it means to be #BornAgain from #Heaven) and Matthew 17:1-9 ( Jesus and #elijah and #Moses hang at the #Transfiguration redux... we had this #pericope a couple weeks ago)

The Exodus and the two New Testament readings are all connected.

I am struck by the specific way 2 Peter affirms the Prophets in the context of the Transfiguration. The Prophets' message was "like a lamp shining in a dark place." But that message was also "until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts." (NLT rendering)

On the one hand, the Prophets are affirmed. On the other hand, there's quite a gap between "a lamp shining in a dark place" and the dawning of a new day. A lamp in the dark is necessary - and think a small flame, not a brilliant LED. The Prophets had a message inspired by God, but they did not know God as Jesus knows his Father. In Jesus the day is dawning. The light of the new day is continuous with a lamp in a dark place, but it is infinitely greater than that lamp. Both illuminate, but one allows one to safely navigate a room; the other transforms the entire waking world.

I love #words. But writing about the mystery of the #transfiguration of Christ, I'm struck how my love of #music and my #faith are similar, in that they both move me profoundly in ways that can't be completely explained in words

Enlightened
