Surely I haven’t done THAT much background reading to revise my “WWI combat medic w/PTSD who realizes his family isn’t only blood relatives” queer romance novel?

Signs point to … hm.

And these are just the ones I’ve kept in print…there are at least twice as many in ebook & I’ve tossed at least this many for being utterly useless unresearched fluff.

I’ve also read a lot of period fiction, some other biographies, and wartime letters for tone&language.

Just came back from , and I really enjoyed it!
A few recommendations:
1/3 Try to follow a guided conducted by independent BerlinGuide.de.

He proposes three thorough tours of the city on its and , its , and its of . I followed the first one, and it was fascinating, with extracts of interviews and documentaries bringing depth to the tour.

Can't wait to follow the other two next time I go there!

Frances C. Outcalt, better known as Cordelia "Delia" Hudson/Frank Dubois passed away on Jul 1, 1920. Around 1880, they left behind their husband and two children in Illinois to pursue a new life as a man in Waupun, WI. As Frank Dubois, they married Gertrude Fuller before being found out and forced to return to IL in Nov 1883. While they never passed as male again, they used the name Frances from then on, especially after their first husband passed and they married W. Outcalt.

Subtitled

Jan Morris interviewed by Robert Robinson on "The Book Programme" about her transition. The BBC Archive team don't seem to be touching it this year, I assume because of the hostile environment on that other place. So here you go.

@lauraamalasunta My freshman year in college I took a Latin poetry course, thinking that my 3 years of high school Latin would prepare me for it. (Reader, those years did not.) But I still recall a classmate reading his translation and the line: He took a sharp rock and emasculated herself.

If you're willing to share your rewrite, I would love to read it.

ETA: I'd also love to read more of your work on the subject of . It's a far far older phenomenon that most realise.

Do people seriously not know the Stonewall Rebellion involving throwing bricks at violent police who attacked LGBTQIA at the Stonewall bar? And that it was primarily queer trans people of color fighting back?

I encountered people calling this a fantastical story, and it made me want to toss an LGBTQIA history book at them.

*sighs*

Please go watch the excellent biopic: Happy Birthday, Marsha! created/directed by Reina Gossett. them.us/story/happy-birthday-m

If you'd like a list of good books to read about this, let me know, and I'll add it to the thread.

Thanks.

One fascinating tidbit I've found going back through trans history is the casual manner which hormones are talked about. What is now considered an extremely important and irreversible treatment was once seemingly considered a fully reversible step to be taken surprisingly lightly, and as nothing more than a stepping stone to bottom surgery. I wonder what caused the change in opinion among doctors?

159 years ago, in 1864, the Rutland Weekly Herald reports of 150 military recruits who were discovered to be women, who were banned from serving. During this period, it was not uncommon for women to dress as men for economic reasons, such as better jobs and pay. While this does not inherently make any of them queer or trans, it does speak to the willingness to challenge rigid gender roles to improve their lives.

51 years ago, in 1972, the National Coalition of Gay Organizations held a Gay Pride rally at Lafayette Park in Washington D.C. This event marked an important moment in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, helping to solidify the community's visibility and strength in fighting for their rights.

Anybody else watch the Season 5, Episode 15 of The Love Boat (1982)? It was the first time I saw a person mentioned on TV. My reaction to it deep down was very different than my family, but I could not dare to tell them why and I didn’t know myself. Or, rather, I didn’t dare to admit it to myself.

@histodons REPAIR: Disability Heritage Collective has published a fantastic series of digital case studies on queer and trans history (as it relates to the history of disability) at a Minnesota reformatory in the mid-1900s. I'm grateful to Laura Leppink and @skpawlicki for inviting me to contribute research.

There are five story maps in the collection; they start here:
