"Knežević’s original Croatian has been rendered into the most spectacular and lively English by the dynamic duo of Ellen Elias-Bursać and Paula Gordon."

Some #ShamelessSelfPromotion to start the weekend: My 2020 co-translation of an award-winning Montenegrin novel has just come out as an audio book! Catherine the Great and the Small by Olja Knežević, translated by me and Ellen Elias-Bursać. Strange to hear it read in an accent other than my own (or the voice in my head). https://www.spiracleaudiobooks.com/audiobooks/catherine-the-great-and-the-small

MARRIED LIFE by #DavidVogel, a brilliant novel set in 1920s Vienna, is a disturbing & depressing story of a doomed marriage. What I love about contemporaneously written novels is the way they offer a glimpse of a particular time & place through the lens of someone who was actually there, satisfying my nostalgia for an era that I can only experience through literature. Originally written in Hebrew, Dalya Bilu's translation is impeccable.

Aww, sad to hear #DubravkaUgrešić died a couple weeks ago. She's one of those authors where after reading just one book I add all their other work to my TBR list. #bookstodon #LiteratureInTranslation #TranslatedFiction

Just out in paperback, this excellent new translation (by Jesse Kirkwood) of Tokyo Express, by one of the godfathers of Japanese detective fiction, Seicho Matsumoto, an engrossing, old-school detective novel from Penguin Classics, highly recommended by our own Joe

I'm #NowReading Tomb of Sand by #GeetanjaliShree and had to stop to google a bunch of names/titles of Partition authors. Now I have books from #KrishnaSobti and #Manto on the way. That's how #TranslatedFiction gets ya! #bookstodon #LiteratureInTranslation

"'It’s weird, isn't it? How people change. You start out loving them, you see them all the time and then suddenly something happens - or nothing happens - and you don't see them any more and you don't know why and then later you come across them in the street and you say hello and you keep walking.'"
Raw & confronting that "or nothing happens".

"Beauty can pierce one like a pain."
From BUDDENBROOKS (1901) by #ThomasMann, tr. by Helen T. Lowe Porter.
I have an Aschenbach-like infatuation with this photo of a handsome Thomas Mann from around the time Buddenbrooks, his first novel, was published. I did two separate #PasteUps of it back in 2010.

At The White Rabbit Inn, a seedy tavern run by the ogress, or ex-con, Old Lady Ponisse, & frequented by criminals, thugs, & disreputable types, the drinks have wonderful names:
"On the wall were several glass flasks...These bottles contained adulterated pink and green liquids that went by the names of 'Perfect Love' and 'Consolation'."
I'm up for a glass of Perfect Love or Consolation.

Didn't know the film was based on BLACK SNOW: A NOVEL OF THE BEIJING DEMIMONDE by #LiuHeng. Otherwise I would have read the novel first. An added dilemma: which translation? David Kwan's (on the left) or Howard Goldblatt's?
I went with the Goldblatt translation after reading someone's convincing hatchet job of the Kwan translation. They were lukewarm about the novel too. Regardless, I began to enjoy the novel when I stopped trying to like it more than the film. [2/2]

Been here a month, so re- #introduction for the new 🌊. I'm a: doggo guardian; avid reader (💜 avant-garde/experimental and #translatedFiction); 🎶 junkie + #metalhead; #vinyl collector; sometimes #blogger; daily watcher of something #StarWars; #exEvangelical; #exAcademic in classical #Latin + #Greek poetry; and medical/science/health informatics #editor / #writer. Also, still don't know what to be when I grow up. If I could live in a secluded cabin in the mountains the rest of my life, I would.

This short story collection caught my eye in a charity shop. For reasons unknown, I tend to gravitate towards books with rabbits on the cover! 🐰
I love translated fiction, and if the words ‘horror’ and ‘surreal’ are used to describe a book, I’m all over it 🤗
Oh, AND it’s got French Flaps* - oo-la-la! 😂
*a personal favourite in terms of cover design for me because it’s like having built-in bookmarks! 😉

Thumbs up to The Hobart Bookshop for their huge shelf dedicated solely to #TranslatedFiction. (Melbourne bookshops should take a leaf out of their book.)
Had to restrain myself when buying because I don't have much room for more #books in my small suitcase. And my partner gave me a death stare when I asked if he'd give me some room in his bag. So I just bought these two:
GILGI, ONE OF US by #IrmgardKeun tr. by Geoff Wilkes

After a long delay in postage, so happy today to have finally recieved my translator's copy of the summer edition of THE SOUTHERN REVIEW. The delay seems fitting though: it's arrived just in time for the start of the Australian summer.
It features my #translation of @gpayares's story called "The Whales." Thrilled to be sharing #Venezuelan #TranslatedFiction.
BTW, it also contains @lauranagle's translation of a story by Monique Debruxelles, which I can't wait to read.
