It doesn't give you confidence when the first paragraph in the body of a Japanese text you're translating has basic errors...

This information processing system includes x, y, z.
The image processing system may also have a and b.
It feels like I'm the first reader...
So the thing about #translating #medieval texts is that you can get it 95% done very quickly, 99% polished after years of effort, and 100% done only by abandoning your goals of a clear and idiomatic rendering readily intelligible to a non-specialist...
Incidentally, I need to figure out how to render several #Syriac words/phrases into English:
* ܥܝܪ̈ܐ ("watchers" or angels)
* ܪܡܙܐ (providence, divine will, signal from God)
* ܡܕܒܪܢܘܬܐ (leadership, government, providence, salvation economy)
* ܓܢܣܐ ("race" or "kind" or "species," often with "our" to denote humanity)

I love my computer-aided translation (CAT) tool - I use OmegaT
The patent I'm working from essentially repeated itself describing two similar flow charts, so I "wrote" almost 1000 words in 45 minutes

#BritishMuseum settles case with @yilinwriter after using her work #translating Chinese feminist #poet #QiuJin, then removing it, all w/o permission, credit, or payment - “the worst possible outcome. The public are now not only being denied the chance to see my translations, and to know who wrote them, but also the chance to read Qiu Jin’s words too ... two female writers of colour have both had their work erased. We are not disposable.”

Interesting projects for translation [2]:
Did you hear about https://github.com/adil192/saber? It's a great app for taking (not only handwritten) notes. Although it's still in the pre-release phase, it's already been translated into 14 languages! Do you want to have Saber translated to your native language, when it will be finally released? Just add your translation and keep updating it! Don't forget to check your translation "in action", so you can be sure it's perfect!

The contract's squared away, so I think it's safe to tell you my translation of Isis Aquino's "Historia de un piano en el espaciotiempo" (first published by Supraversum) will appear in MAYDAY Magazine!!!

Do you want to add a web GUI to your scanner? Try https://github.com/sbs20/scanservjs! It's the first project of my collection of updated valuable translations. It's been translated into 15 languages (ar, cs, de, en_US, es, fr, it, nl, pl, pt_BR, pt, ru, sk, tr, zh) so far! Don't see yours? Feel free to add your translation like a few people before. Don't forget to check your translation, blind translation isn't so good!

Interesting projects for translation [0]:
I'm a translator of some cool FOSS projects. Some of them are translated into a few languages, but I think it could be always better. This (irregularly updated) thread will be about interesting projects I support by translation to my native language (Czech). I think, when they are already translated to (not very used) Czech, other languages could follow it and fill the gap. Don't forget to update your translations after!

❌ all of the gas is discharged
✅ the gas is entirely exhausted
because alliteration gives me wings when doing technical translation 😂
the beauty of setting higher rates is that more even more difficult work can still pay better than shovelling shite at a lower rate
Yesterday I attended the seminar "From Mother Tongue to Other Tongue", where Jayasree Kalathil spoke about the challenges in #translation from #Malayalam to #English while keeping in mind her own privileges, #translating a different culture without simplifying it, and not pandering to the mythical "english reader". It was the best thing I've stumbled onto through #EventBrite so far, and it's awesome that it is now available on #YouTube, so you can give it a listen, too!

From the description: "As migrants, we are ‘selves in translation,’ or as translator Madhu Kaza puts it, selves living ‘in the silence between languages.’ Thinking about the question of translatability and of the racial, gendered, casteist and classist nature of languages have a direct impact on how we engage in translation. What does it mean to render the diversity and idiosyncrasy of a language into English, a language with a long history of colonialism and erasure of cultures and identities? How does one negotiate the conflicting demands for foreignization or domestication, or the calls to italicize otherness? How do we work towards translations that embody difference, otherness, unease?"

Currently #translating from German #folklore : Tales of magical travel.
Which apparently can mean transforming an inanimate object into half an animal such as a calf or a goat - the front half, to be precise. This half-animal can then be ridden through the air at great speed.

Just delivered a translation together with 7 pages of comments (as opposed to 1, 1, and 4 for three recent jobs of similar size and for the same end client) 🙃
Just finished the 2nd draft of my German translation of Brandon #Sanderson's #Skyward Flight novellas #cytoverse #translating
This is also the magic moment I finally reformat the text to standard manuscript to see how much I'm going to be paid :D
Been working on this since last September. Phew

@thisisrjg @nevali I read once that when machine-translating between multiple languages then not every combination gets translated directly but instead using a #intermediate #language. Often English is a partner for all other languages so #translating CN-DE could be done using CN-EN-DE. This leads to more steps where possible mistakes and ambiguities can be introduced.

Did you know, #WoodpeckerCI does have #localization ?
If your #language is not there jet or not finished, just start #translating and if it is just a few words. https://translate.woodpecker-ci.org/

Sigh…alright, anyone know when “happy ending” became a term in massage? Not the practice, the term, when it entered the language? In case there are any innocents here, I don’t mean “and they all lived happily ever after”.
Was it is use in the late 1960s? #slang #language #translating
I've written 4,444 words for the current translation I'm doing, so I'll stop there for the day
