Good Sunday morning #TransMastodon

So if you follow our friend @faithisleaping you probably saw her post yesterday that included a picture of us together.

Yes!!!

The planets aligned just right and I had the wonderful opportunity to have lunch with her and her lovely wife.

We sat for a couple of hours just talking away. It felt cut way too short but I had a pretty good drive ahead of me and unfortunately had to leave.

And if any of you know Faith at all from her posts, you know she’s one of nicest girls here on TransMastodon. Well it is equally true in person and then some. And her wife is an absolute doll as well.

Thank you Faith and Mrs Faith for spending your Saturday afternoon with this little hot mess. Muah!!! 😊

They of course looked lovely and ready for a casual lunch with a friend. I on the other hand came screeching in, a hot mess and looking like I had just stepped off the ball field of the city lesbian softball league and was still 40min late. Sorry about that Faith. 🤗

#SwimEngland have announced a new policy of having 2 categories of "female" and "open" in their competitions so that trans athletes can compete in the open group. I was pleased on reading this as sport is supposed to be for everyone and I'm glad trans people aren't being excluded (for once) but I'm just curious to know what the lovely #TransMastodon community think about it?

I understand the want to have an us-versus-them kind of discussion when it comes to #Twitter and the #TwitterMigration. For me, there isn't that much of a resistance effort; I never used Twitter. I was eager to join a platform that seemed like it was more gauged towards my interests. I think one of the best ways we make a space like this inviting for the people that are migrating from Twitter is to do just that: create a space where you are genuine and honest in how you feel and what you make.

I see these things crop up in my feed saying that Mastodon should be a place where we "bend over backwards" for certain groups of people. In my opinion, not only does this come across as disingenuous, it's also disempowering. It presumes the premise that we, as a collective, determine the infrastructure and rules of this social network. The main thing that I would say to anyone that wants to join is that the spaces you create and join can be fully your own. You can have your own rules, federate with whomever you like, and connect with like-minded people. With giant monolithic conversations, there was always a line of toxicity that would try to corrupt that.

I would say that this message of empowerment for the creation of spaces is especially true for people coming from #BlackTwitter. #BlackMastodon is just #Mastodon. #TransMastodon is just #Mastodon. Is that erasure? No, it is reflecting on the fact that we've treated blackness and other such attributes as a monolith for far too long. Among subgroups, for example, Hispanic people, there is far more diversity that a lot of people give it credit for. Having a place where people engage in the discussions they want is not a function of someone's authenticity, Blackness, Latinidad, or anything else. It's just being human.
