@Ciarancuffe and @jonworth in Wynn's Hotel this evening talking about cross border rail and Sail & Rail and what needs to be done to make them a more attractive alternative to flying for international travel in Europe.

It shouldn't be cheaper to fly from Dublin to Kerry than it is to take the train, or cheaper to fly Dublin to London than travel by sail and rail. We need to follow France's example and tax aviation to subsidise rail and ferry as more sustainable alternatives.

@d_mathieson connects the dots between missed #TransportEmissions targets & political unhappiness about cancelled roads projects.
"Until the leadership of large parties are prepared to unambiguously support and communicate the steps that are needed to decarbonise clearly to the public, and not just to subcontract this work out to the Green Party, then the usual “I’m all for reducing emissions, just not here” impulses are going to make it extremely hard to meet targets"

I listened to a ten minute slot on #RTEDrivetime earlier where the presenter discussed the problem of unusually high levels of air traffic in Europe this summer and the problems that was causing. He spoke with a tourism industry lobbyist and a Fine Gael TD. It was only at the very end of the discussion, almost as an afterthought, that the presenter asked if perhaps we should be limiting air travel because of the environmental impact.
Neither guest agreed.

How, in 2023, can a state agency have a "strategic" plan to double the number of air passengers from 28 million to 55 million per annum?
There is no possible scenario in which this is compatible with the government's statutory obligation to reduce transport emissions by 50% in the next seven years.

Ryanair still talking about building a third terminal at Dublin Airport and want to take it out of State control. This is madness.
If we really want to tackle the capacity issues at the airport we need to bring in a frequent flyer levy. This will also help in reducing carbon emissions from aviation by taxing the wealthiest in our society.

There's is absolutely no justification for reintroducing flights between Dublin and Cork airports and to even float this idea is highly irresponsible.

The trend in car transport continues upwards for almost all commuter types with a notable exception for primary school children where we are seeing the beginnings of a downward trend. (A slight decrease for college students can be explained by an increase in those students working from home)

I news that will surprise absolutely no one, the AA wants to delay plans to introduce measures to reduce car use.
Of course, they've been clever and couched this in terms that make it sound like they are supportive but in reality their intention is to delay the necessary action to meet our legally binding emissions targets.

If these measures are still considered radical we're in a bad place

Unsurprisingly the car sales industry in Ireland (I refuse to call it a motor industry) is jumping on this to make excuses for not making the necessary shift to decarbonise transport.
Dr Caulfield referred to this research which shows that emissions from SUVs worldwide reached almost 1 billion tonnes in 2022 and the rate of growth of electric SUVs is not enough to offset the increasing oil consumption and emissions of the wider fleet
