Good news for (the few remaining) #Minnesota #lynx.

The state has banned the use of strangulation snares where most lynx currently live. This will avoid inadvertent #trapping of the cats.

Of course, trapping in general is inhumane and is *mainly* done to provide fur for luxury clothing items. As with #mink farming, this practice should be banned other than for traditional purposes.

"In the time of Enos Mills, and until relatively recently, #beaver were abundant in the Estes Valley, Tahosa Valley, and in many parts of North America. Locally, there were beaver dams and lodges at Lily Lake and along Fish Creek. There were also beaver colonies in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), creating and maintaining habitat for many other species. A good example of a thriving beaver colony can be seen from Fish Creek Road, west of the intersection with Rockwood Lane. But now, beaver are rare in this area. What happened? Outside RMNP, #trapping, #grazing, #logging, and human settlement took its toll on beaver populations. Inside RMNP, #overgrazing by ungulates like elk, and now moose, eliminated willow habitat beavers depended on and turned the marshes into dry meadow."

Recently I trapped 5 #rats in the garden within 3 weeks. The last one had a surprise – the trap had disappeared from the trap box. We eventually found the trap with the dead rat a few metres away, behind a shrub. The rat looked to have died right away, so I’m guessing a cat took it from the box rather than a case of an escapee rat. Quite impressive: I find it a bit tricky myself opening the ‘door’ of the trap box.
