My latest membership card for the Australian Society of Travel Writers turned up, with a brand-new logo. Very smooth. #TravelWriter
The number of images I had published in 2022-2023 alongside my words continued to bump along the bottom of the graph, but that had nothing to do with the pandemic - publications have long since learned how to source images cheap or free online.
Here's the image chart anyway, for completeness.

I was hoping for big things in the post-pandemic restrictions period, but it was still very hard to place travel writing in the financial year just passed (2022-2023); I suspect because publications had a big backlog of articles and not yet a bigger page count. So to my disappointment the annual number of words I'd had published in freelance articles was a little below that of 2021-2022 (and that was a year with lockdowns in it!).
Below is the chart I've kept of my published wordcount since 2009.
Hoping for better in the year to come.
Creating spreadsheets for another financial year. Occurs to me I've been doing this for a while now.
Feeling pleased with myself, created two new Patreon posts about Far North Queensland during the course of this flight. Inflight wifi (at least on Qantas domestic flights) is getting a lot more reliable.
If you'd like to read those posts when they go live exclusively for my patrons over the next few days, please sign up here: https://www.patreon.com/timrichards
Would love to have you as part of my gang of happy patrons, and patronage starts from a mere $4 per month (you can cancel anytime).
And that means this Saturday you'll discover the story behind this pump!

Now free for all to read... English is a language which loves variety; hence the pressure on a writer not to repeat the same word. So why are there not enough synonyms?

Pleased to see that 6 of the 10 travel stories on the front page of my website (I always have the Ten Most Recently Published there) are about places outside Australia: http://iwriter.com.au/
Has taken a while to get back to that kind of ratio. Goodbye pandemic!

Hi all. I have a big Europe train trip coming up, and I'm looking for interesting things to write about in the following cities:
Lisbon
Madrid
Barcelona
Lyon
Venice
Zagreb
Split
Dubrovnik
Belgrade
If you have any ideas, please let me know in the replies. I particularly like themed walking tours, and anything that's off the beaten track (ie not the main tourist attractions that've been written about a million times already).
Thanks!
