The future of transportation is in the hands of people who live in the past. #TRBAM
In the year twenty-twenty-two, the #TRBAM conference continues to be held in-person only, in a conference venue with wifi so bad that people connecting remotely to committee meetings can only hear every third syllable, and the people running the web meeting portion can't be bothered to make sure remote participants can see the presentation.
There was a current and future trends in cycling session at #trbam that sought to categorize pandemic trips by "recreational" or "utilitarian". First, language matters. To electeds, "recreational"= nice to have the less of a funding priority.
What if we exploit the sensors of Connected Autonomous Vehicles #CAV to the benefit of #cyclist #priotization? Alphonse Vial and I have researched this and today (January 10) I presented this at #TRBAM. If you want to see the poster in more detail, you can find it here: https://amsalomons.weblog.tudelft.nl/internet-of-things-traffic-control-the-bicycle/

I also got to make progress on an exciting study with @carlosfpardo@twitter.com, catch up with great old friends @erikvergel@twitter.com and @yinglingfan@twitter.com, have a late-night dinner with my lovely & awesome PhD advisor Daniel Rodriguez, learn a new trick from @Transportist, and get actual IRL time with countless colleagues I normally only see on-screen.
Despite the #FairfieldInn having zero hot water, it was a very worthwhile and inspiring #TRBAM for me.
I'm happy to have gotten in 1.5 action-packed days at #TRBAM, but having predictable FOMO about the sessions and people I'm missing now that I'm back home. I'll never not be annoyed about having to choose between attending the biggest conference in the #transportation field and coming home to teach the future leaders of my field.
At least I got to meet the incomparable @davidzipper!
@bikepedantic @BarbChamberlain @kklevine @huyenkle @ctvoulgaris -- so sorry not to get a chance to catch up!
This is the first #TRBAM I've ever been at that I haven't used Twitter at all. It's weird.
I was one of the first people to Tweet from the conference back in 2008 (or 2007?). It was seriously just me and 1 other person.
And I used to be one of the most prolific TRB Tweeters!
But now, I'm not giving that platform my labor and I'm a little bummed.
Oh well. Thanks to those of you who are talking about the conference here.
When we talk about workforce development in #transportation, what are we talking about? Administration? Engineering? Planning? Construction? Operations? 🤔
What actual jobs?
I should probably post this on Twitter for engagement, but I would love to meet folks at #TRBAM who are unionists. Y'all exist, right?
I'm almost intrigued enough to try...

My first “this is more of a comment than a question” of #TRBAM 🥺
I do wonder in bicycle safety research how cycling behavior differs by age and cycling background. I’m thinking of those #VehicularCycling weirdos vs road racers vs folks just getting around.
Interesting use of traffic cameras to collect micromobility use data in Asbury Park, NJ.
I do question their approach to assume gender from travelers in the video. It’s all you can do, but also really flattens fever and relies on the traditional binary. How would I be counted? 🧐
I should look up research about this area.
Also interesting to hear #TacticalUrbanism being used for pilot demonstration projects.
I always thought the clandestine, unofficial actions outside the realm of public agencies. They are subversive in nature and a form of civic protest.
But the term is wary catchier than “quick build”.

@Will @sammogh @sofio @bikepedantic got to ride a little of it this morning on my way to #trbam and *chef's kiss*
I wonder how many TRB committees looking to improve DEI are focusing on their demographic metrics, are also looking at how their work itself could improve equity and justice their work? 🤔 #TRBAM
