He served his apprenticeship at Tredegar Ironworks, where he experienced four near fatal accidents!

The Nant Dyar Viaduct in the Clydach Gorge: part of that incredible feat of engineering, the Merthyr, Tredegar and Abergavenny Railway (absorbed by the London and North Western Railway).

It was built by engineer John Gardner in 1862 and widened in 1877.

Eight arches comprising a total length of 312 feet and standing 75 feet off the valley floor. Now a Grade II listed building and mainained as a footpath.
