This weekend I was finally able to finish this bird shaped pencil-holder. Last year I saw a picture of a similar object online and I just had to make it myself to feel the smooth curves and minimal aesthetic. The tree-ring lines are so beautiful, it clearly has a lot of stories to tell.

It’s made of poplar wood, which I found quite hard to carve so I had to use some power tools to get rid of big chunks of wood.

The UK Oak Project is an inter-disciplinary project investigating the physical and chemical properties of oak tree-rings to advance dendrochronology and science-based dating in archaeology. This is super promising for past climate modelling, finer dating of medieval and ancient buildings.
