After Re- Re-
some final thoughts on
Gratuitous Violence Post Katrina;

Whether COOPERATION or COMPETITION is the cultural norm in a country, there will always be a number of people with an extreme commitment to that norm. And nowhere is the social eugenicist’s wet dream of competition more normal than at the carefully constructed and maintained margins of US society.

The wonder is not that overt gratuitous violence exists, but how little there is. It’s not “all guns” - I’d wager policing adds to a great deal of it.

Re-visiting reports that during the first desperate week of Katrina the state ordered police and troops to open fire on looters, I’m reminded of the contrasting response to disaster in Japan, after Fukushima; and the sight of an old man weeping with shame because, after 3 days, he had broken into a house and stolen a bottle of water to take to his dying wife.

How much cognitive dissonance must it take to cling to the idea is not violence? Not just unfettered capitalism, but an extreme capitalism reliant on government welfare directed solely at mega-corporations, and party crones.
Any god who can’t dream up a better way to order society than deny people even a CHANCE at somehow procuring basic food, shelter, medical care or a god that denies people even hope is a fairly shit god, and probably a god designed by someone with something they value more than other humans

Re- (post Katrina New Orleans)
Review part 5

Found myself then re- 2007
author was born in 1936 so his style and characters are a wee bit dated but I found his story about Katrina riveting all over again.

Tin Roof supplements Treme as a source of insights into all the rorting grifting and political disregard behind the US Federal govt inaction then non-response to Katrina.

Treme has a lot to say about why no one wanted those displaced by Katrina to come back (for a start, those remaining would be more likely to vote republican); and shows how billions were wasted on housing schemes. The Tin Roof Blowdown has the sort of commentary that makes some detective novels so satisfying; Place is a major character, and “the character of that character” is everything.

Re- (post Katrina New Orleans)

Review part 4

Khandi Alexander (Mama Pope in Scandal) plays bar owner La Donna Batiste-Williams in Treme, and if it’s always a treat to see a powerful actor play the part of a strong woman, La Donna’s story will knock yer socks off.

Treme is full of great characters and stories.

Re- set in Post Katrina New Orleans
Review part 3

Theatre
not just Mardi Gras, but a way of life

Special mention to the character DJ Davis played by Steve Zahn who flirts with being the most puerile spoiled white boy in film history (i would hate to live with him/ be his next door neighbour) but keeps being not all bad, especially his love for the political
(next toot we look at the character La Donna played by Khandi Alexander)

Here, finally frustrated with the music business he records “I Quit” - I’m sure i’ve expressed similar sentiments many times. over the years, but less artistically

Re- (great armchair travel as well as entertainment)
Review Part 2
New Orleans is not just music, it’s also;

Food (tho none of it is my cappuccino cos i’m a picky eater)

“Stuffed Mirlitons”? When I learned mirlitons are just chokos I couldn’t help but wonder what chokos ever AREN’T stuffed eating?

Back to the chef character/ food theme; I did see a soft boiled egg that looked edible… until it was ruined by putting it on top of some other stuff

Chef in this show is both good at and passionate about making something a lot of people want, but still struggles to make a living. Chef tries harder and tries different, but learns Crapitalism still sux.

In this brief scene, a discussion on a shrimp boat

Re- (4 Seasons)

Review Part 1

(Katrina first landfall was 23 aug 2005)

Story:
Treme Follows several characters (whose paths sometimes cross)
in post-Katrina New Orleans
(a lawyer, a chef, wannabe musicians, established musicians, a businessman, a bar owner, an Indian Chief…)
(Think Altman’s Nashville, but far more entertaining and with much better music)
WRITING & STORY-TELLING AT ITS BEST

The Politics:
So much of the story is politics of Katrina because, well, life IS politics, as much as we’d prefer it wasn’t
e.g. The Hurricane was weather, but the flood and consequences were a man-made, federal f*-up, and the grifting that followed was … more in that vein

Characters:
Even the irritating characters in Treme have redeeming features (all likeable or tolerable - except the cops, of course)

The Music:
The series is set in New Orleans, so of course music drives much of the story, and a lot (tho’ not all) of the music in Treme is Jazz - not my favourite genre, but tbf the genre is a broad one.
Most of the soundtrack ranges from “okay” to “great”. There is even a metal scene 😬 So, lotta jazz, plenty of Indian (i.e. Native American), some country;

This scene is from an early episode;

I was Thinking about this song by Steve Earle while going back to my hometown under sad circumstances, few days ago.
Like the city in the song, My city doesn't change much. there is a sort of greatness about her, allot of bad things also. no matter how many years since I've left, it always feels like home.

"I'm ever gonna leave this town
This city won't wash away
This city won't ever drown"

Conocí la fascinante historia de estos "indios negros" hace unos años al ver la serie y es algo fascinante.

Si hubiera estado en Santiago Hubiera ido a ver el concierto sin duda alguna.

If you go to New Orleans for , don't miss your chance to learn about New Orleans unique history and culture, with french, African and native American roots! It's also the place where all modern guitar music originated.

I can recommend the walking tour (and the HBO series, of course).

@Gina I hope you love it as much as I did! I didn't realise that I was watching the final episode last night until the last 10 minutes and now I'm sad that it's over.
