For unknown reasons I've been encouraged to get into #doom mapping lately. The doom community is much more prolific than the #quake, community so I assumed that there would be something #trenchbroom -ish to work with in a nice and modern way.
Then I downloaded UDB, and I'm kinda... ...is this it?
I have this nagging feeling that I'm missing something obvious here, because this feels awkward and janky.
I'm examining the boundaries between natural and artificial light. Not sure I like some of the texture work on the walls, which is really basic, but it's easy to change.
Absolutely do not care about lighting rn, hee-hee
It's great that Linux now has plenty of creative #FOSS apps that let us avoid the Scourge of Adobe.
The problem comes in that the absolute disaster of #Wayland adoption, which we're all supposed to love and migrate to, is thoroughly incompatible with so many creative packages like #Krita or #TrenchBroom.
And it's not like Wayland is brand new. I don't know how we can go this long with an "upgrade" and still have so many important apps broken, apps that are vital to some people's careers.

Yo, RBDOOM-3-BFG has made its 1.5.0 release, with support for DX12/Vulkan, glTF2 models/anims, and support for level creation in #Blender in addition to #TrenchBroom and *Radiant-style editors.
It can even convert #Quake .map files to #doom3; feel free to port your old stuff to a modern engine!

A fork of #TrenchBroom gained support for creating maps for #DOOM3 so I decided to try things out by throwing together a simple map, but I couldn't resist adding a little scripting in there.

E1M6 got too long, so I'm cutting a cave filled with marsdogs and the silver key pipe maze. I may reuse them elsewhere, so I've saved them to a "cutting room" map file. Thought it was cool and and contains the a lot of the spirit of what Dimension X is about though so I made a video showing it off. Check it out here!

@Alapidis I don't have anything unity-specific, but the first thing that comes to mind is #MagicaVoxel but it's more of a voxel modeller & pathtracer than a level editor.
#GodotEngine has a 3D gridmap tool built-in which lets you put arbitrary models and objects on a 3d grid, but it feels pretty neglected & clunky.
And while #TrenchBroom isn't doing anything with voxels, it's a map editor designed for quake-engine games which might be grid-based enough for some inspiration?

Only thing I really need to figure out is how to make it easy for mappers to "compile".
