New 'in press' trilobite paper by Peng et al. in the journal Palaeoworld about a new Cambrian dameselloid trilobite--and casts some doubt on the supposed relationship between dameselloids and the later odontopleurids. The trident of Walliserops is rigid, fixed to the head. Even if it did spear a tasty morsel on it, there is no way it could have gotten it to its mouth. Cue sad trilobite noises. Here is a new trilobite species, Eosaukia anhuiensis Lei & Peng in press. The paper is a preview before it is printed in Acta Palaeontologica Sinica. Just look at those bizarre genal spines coming off the side of the head!

Let's celebrate #trilobitetuesday with Phantaspis auritus Sun et al., 2020--a bizarre middle Cambrian trilobite from Shandong, China. It has an unusual anterior extension on the front of its head. Why? We don't know. Ontogenetic stages of this critter are preserved showing that this feature was not present in the babies. #trilobita #fossils #paleontology #palaeontology #trilobites #cambrian
