I usually choose to make lvm partitions to do dmraid and also choose to keep at least 25% vacant for #WearLeveling and #GarbageCollection as well as #TRIM to work, and round it down so I can mix & match drives
But then again going #ZFS is the smarter route...

TRIM can be enabled by changing the device’s provisioning mode, best done with #udev rules.
Now I want to find out what this provisioning mode actually is.

Also, I started concerning myself with sector size (for better performance) and reducing disk writes (by moving certain directories to #tmpfs).
For the latter I’d like to use #Arch’s #profile-sync-daemon, but the later versions require #systemd, which my #Gentoo system lacks. I’ll check if a fork is available or if creating one is feasible.

No means to tell the drive what's used or not means that once you've fully filled it once, it can only notice locations being overwritten. So it has to do the whole stop the world, compacting & garbage-collection every time its cache/buffer fills.
Some controllers notice full zero overwrites, but some don't. #TRIM is necessary for DM-SMR.
