(continuing the thread on ) … notice the "BBC" logo in the previous post is adhering to "shoot and protect", laying it in severely far from the edge. This reflects some of the practices in 1998-2008 when the UK was transitioning to widescreen while giving a lot of thought into the simulcasting of analogue TV, a system that was retrospectively defined as locked-in to 4:3.

SBS TV had a fun time "" for a brief period around 2010, producing separate subtitles ("burned in" or open captions, not closed ones) when movies were widescreen with lots of handy black bar space was available to put the subtitles in. SDTV had it aligned for 16:9, with the words overlapping the image. And briefly, HDTV had the new sharper font available for the latest movies, briefly before shutdown.
