Hello everyone, I joined Mastodon to write and discuss about my research on monitoring air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions with imaging remote sensing instruments. My research focus on the regional and local scale i.e. citites and individual facilities using airborne instruments and future satellite instruments (#tropomi #CO2M #AVIRIS-NG #ARES). I am affiliated with the Laboratory for Air Pollution / Environmental Technology at the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology #Empa and teach at the Department of Geography #giuz at University of Zurich #uzh .

Something to note when using the #Tropomi (or any UV sensor) Aerosol Index. While it is quite good for detecting smoke/dust in suspension, it also has too many false positives.

Such as here in ongoing #wildfires in Chile. Heat sensitive channels show location of fires (dots) but not inside the lower circle.

The overlapping AI has high values within the circles inclusive where there are no fires. This is a known bias caused by the bright surface underneath .

#CopernicusAtmosphere Monitoring Service #ECMWF total column #SO2 5-day forecast from 30 November 00 UTC showing larger area of the plume from the #MaunaLoa 🌋 Hawaii eruption being transported eastwards across the Pacific. Some filaments reach the US in the next few days and will become clearer as more GOME-2 & #TROPOMI 🛰️ observations are assimilated in coming days.

#Sentinel5P #TROPOMI data for the #MaunaLoa #eruption showing ~0.2 Tg SO₂ on Nov 28. SO₂ furthest east is at higher altitude than the plume nearer the #volcano. For reference, we estimate that the 1984 Mauna Loa eruption emitted ~1.2 Tg SO₂. #MaunaLoaEruption @CopernicusEU

Although I already made an account here in April, I'm still new and only starting to explore mastodon. Time for an introduction:
I'm a #phd student at Wageningen University using #tropomi satellite data to study ship NOx emissions.
There are rather new regulation on how much pollution ships can emit and monitoring compliance is notoriously difficult as this happens on sea. My PhD is thus focused on using satellite remote sensing for this issue.
