Intense convective activity in the lee-side of the Andes mountains. This is northern in the middle of the summer, with so much in this intense convection, it is one of the mechanisms by which surface dust can reach the mid and upper in the Southern Hemisphere.

The north edge of these clouds is south of the tip of southern Africa , so dust injected by them can potentially travel +6000km til reaching surface.

For those wondering today why locating a observational on a flank of an active volcano:
1. It is remote from major pollution sources and located at a hight of 3.4 km above sea level - a perfect spot for sampling background air in the well mixed free .
2. It is easily accessible and has a good local infrastructure.
3. It is also the longest of CO2 observations.
A win-win situation for 😀

ok, it's not a great pic, but the cloud formations were stunning, and I just had to take a photo!

I took this a day flight down to S.Africa (most from Europe are overnight flights) over Africa @ approx 33/35000 ft.

Was told this is a 'pileus' cloud

is upping the height of Earth’s lower

balloons collect a range of measurements as they ascend into the sky. Those in the Northern Hemisphere show that the upper boundary of the — the slice of sky closest to the ground — has been climbing. Over the past 40 years, it’s moved steadily upward. Its rate of climb has been some 50 to 60 meters (165 to 200 feet) per decade.
