I guess Trump's lawyers weren't able to convince him of just how bad of an idea it would be for him to testify in open court. His deposition in the case was nothing short of a train-wreck because he's incapable of telling the truth, and presenting himself as a reasonable and decent man. If he takes the stand, Carroll's lawyers will destroy him, and cast a blinding light on his fundamental dishonesty, lack of integrity.

I have absolutely no problem believing The State of New York would have gone after Trump even if he had been a Democrat and well liked.
Look what happened when Andrew Cuomo was accused of sexual harassment. They aren't prosecuting Trump because he's an unpopular Republican. They're prosecuting him because he's a criminal. The fact that they and everyone else hate trump is just a bonus.

Trump has at least 26 adult women who claim he sexually assaulted them. There is also at least one woman who claims Trump raped her with Epstein when she was only 13. That same woman says Epstein made a 12 year old girl disappear because she wouldn't keep her mouth shut.
They didn't have choices. Trump is a big dude and his money makes him even scarier.

I don't care that he paid Stormy Daniels; sex-workers deserve to be paid well.

I care about the women and girls he raped and he still isn't being charged for any of those.

If they get Trump's DNA today, It may be possible to prosecute him for the E. Jean Carroll rape if it matches. I am not a lawyer but it is my understanding that the statute of limitations can be removed if there is new evidence to consider.
Even if he can't still be prosecuted, the DNA would still prove he raped her. That would mean more recent rape victims of Trump would have corroborating evidence that he is indeed a rapist.

Trump is pedophile and a rapist. If New York wants to put him away for tax evasion and hush money payments, I have no pity for the child molester being sent to prison on unrelated charges. That way the women, girls, and boys he victimized don't have to relive it in court.
