These are the results of this two-camera combination.

The camera taking the picture, a 10.2 megapixel Pentax K10D, was a good camera for it's time (2006) but shitty by today's standards.

The TLR with the large viewfinder, the Kodak Dualflex II, was not only shitty, it was very dirty inside. But since it was borrowed, I did not dare to clean it. The owner prized the dirty, vintage look of the pictures it would take.

Note: these are interesting but not great pictures. But they give an idea of the potential of shooting through the viewfinder of an old camera.

Would I do it again? Yes, but with a cleaner TLR.

Six weeks ago, I posted a series of pictures taken with a DSLR through the viewfinder (TtV) of a second camera - an Anscoflex, a 1950's pseudo twin lens reflex camera.

Today - the same, but with a different twin lens camera. This time it's a borrowed Kodak Duaflex II, a camera also manufactured in the 1950s.

Union Square and Market Street, as seen through the viewfinder of the Anscoflex.

Again, these are unremarkable photos but nevertheless a very San Francisco POV, that is if you have ever seen this city through a distorted lens held 3 feet off the ground.

Add" some of you might recognize Jose, a San Francisco fixture and genuinely nice guy who worked at St. Anthony's kitchen, providing meals and services for the elderly and truly needy people. When not working there, Jose was out spreading the word.

With a little bit of work, I made a tube that held the Anscoflex at the bottom and my Pentax dSLR on top. The result was an awkward 3 foot shaft that swung from my neck to my waist... but it allowed me to take digital pictures through the viewfinder of the Anscoflex without any stray light hitting the viewfinder from the sides.

The distorted results were charming: not remarkable in content but merely simple snapshots of city scenes taken from a waist-level perspective.

Add: the downward-pointing tube dangling from my neck started a lot of conversations with strangers as I wandered around North Beach and Chinatown.

Ok, something different for #ThrowbackThursday ...

This is my Anscoflex, a $28 dual lens reflex camera made by Ansco in Binghamton, NY between the years 1954 and 1958.

The Anscoflex took 6x6cm images on 620 film, wound by a large, ratcheted knob in the side.

It had just one button - a shutter button - and no other controls. The aperture (f/11) and shutter speed (1/60th of a second) were fixed. And focal distance was 6 feet to infinity. Point, shoot, and pray.

Most notably, the image through the viewfinder (TTV) was large and beautifully distorted. I'm going to share some of those views shortly.
