On this day in 1921, the beginning of the worst race riot in American history. 2 days of violence destroyed the Greenwood section of Tulsa, Oklahoma, nicknamed the "#BlackWallStreet". White supremacists destroyed multiple businesses and killed 300 black people. It all happened after a black man was falsely accused of sexually assaulting a white woman.

History must be taught, no matter how brutal or embarrassing it is, so that it never happens again.

5/31/1921 was one of this country's most horrifying episodes of racist mob violence. Hundreds of Black residents were killed in the #TulsaRaceMassacre. Survivors lost their livelihoods as a white mob set fire to 35 blocks of the #Greenwood District (aka #BlackWallStreet). 1,256 homes were destroyed. In recent years, historians & descendants of survivors have worked hard to revive memories of this all but forgotten chapter.

"Viola Fletcher, 108, and her brother Hughes Van Ellis, 102, were granted Ghanaian citizenship at the Embassy of Ghana in D.C. on Tuesday. In 2021, the two visited Ghana and were given ceremonial names and royal titles. Ghana’s president, Nana Akufo-Addo, also gave Fletcher a plot of land. Considering that Tulsa massacre survivors are still legally fighting for reparations from the city, the symbolism is touching.

As I wrote last year while in Ghana, the country has a long history of presenting itself as a shelter for Black Americans facing persecution abroad. In the early 1960s, Ghana granted scholar W.E.B. Du Bois citizenship after he had experienced years of persecution and FBI surveillance."
