Bizarre ancient #sea creature brings evolution mystery to the surface
A new #tunicate #fossil, a close relative of vertebrates, is half a billion years old. There is now strong evidence that #tunicates are the closest relatives to #vertebrates, but a mystery still surrounds them. How did they evolve, and what did they evolve from? A 500 million-year-old fossil is now telling us more about the #evolution of these peculiar life forms. https://arstechnica.com/science/2023/07/bizarre-ancient-sea-creature-brings-evolution-mystery-to-the-surface/

It's #MarineMonday and our Observation of the Day is this sea squirt (potentially Magnificent Ascidian (Botrylloides magnicoecus)), seen off of #Australia by fiftygrit!

Three years ago, if you’d asked me to name some animals found in rockpools, I sure as heck wouldn’t have mentioned sea squirts. Now, they’re one of my favourite animals and at West Runton, there’s at least 10 different species! This one is Sidnyum turbinatum.

Oh the colours in this photo! Another favourite from my dock fouling experience in Plymouth. I found this colonial sea squirt Botrylloides violaceus in several different colours at this location.

I adore this image so much. I think it looks like a painting! Sea squirts from a marina in Suffolk. 2022 was the year I first went dock fouling. 😍

This colonial sea squirt Botrylloides leachii var. radiata is so beautiful! Very lace-like.

Sea squirt on sea squirt! I think what we’re seeing here is the colonial sea squirt Diplosoma listerianum covering a solitary sea squirt Ciona intestinalis. From a marina in Plymouth.

I can’t wait to go dock fouling again. This colonial sea squirt Botrylloides diegensis was pretty special.
