I thought I would make a first guess as the outturn and in the held today - before any exit poll or results.

A risky thing to do but here goes!

First will be 3-4% lower relative to the electorate than it would otherwise have been - a slightly smaller effect than the 5% that occurred in Northern Ireland when was introduced. Second the national equivalent vote share for London will be lower.

Done our duty in the , still several hours to go everyone, vote if you’re able to. Don’t forget to take ID (flawed as the process is). My feeling is that here in South East Cambs is higher than usual, not sure if that’s good or bad news.

This is really important in challenging the assumption currently being made by rather too many commentators that any reduction in will be neutral in its effects.

It will affect and disproportionately - also lower income voters.

I should add that if, as has been suggested, "greeters" were used to screen out voters without some distance from the polling place - perhaps for reasons of public order - it would be most unlikely that numbers turned away would be recorded accurately if indeed they were recorded at all. Which would no doubt enable the and any academic fellow traveller to assert that no had taken place and that any fall n reflected public choice!

@jappleby123 Any change in may not be neutral between age groups, social classes and communities and thus between candidates/parties - hence concern about possible

And for balance I should add that it is also possible that might go up under certain circumstances. This would be the case if there were a large increase in the proportion of registered voters with postal votes. Since postal vote tends to be much higher this could offset any effect.

Hence the desirability of surveys in addition to administrative data. I will concede that in would be unlikely to bias recording and/or reporting of numbers turned away in the way that those running some other public organisations can be expected to. Nonetheless there seem likely to be voters who discover that they lack and simply stay away. This will show up in the as it did initially in under a similar system.

To clarify further votes cast, postal votes issued and numbers registered to vote are all administrative data made public at or immediately after the count. All will be well defined.

Decided what constitutes an individual voter being turned away cannot but be rather more arbitrary and discretionary. So observed could reduce materially even if the numbers recorded as having been turned away from polling places were very low.

I should add that the approach followed where the result is close enough for there to be some element of doubt will be very different. Returning officers will conduct a recount sometimes even without needing to be asked formally in those circumstances - and it can make for rather a long and tense night for all concerned in consequence!

@AutisticMumTo3

That is the whole point of it.

The fall in is likely to be uneven and may benefit the disproportionately.

It follows that it would make sense to expect some positive effect for the from the reduction in though not as much as would have been the case if the differences in preferences by age shown in the had persisted.

This would not be dissimilar to what appears to be happening as a result of the changed rules for constituency boundaries - where the have also gained less than expected.

Concessionary travel documents for older people will be accepted as valid at while those for younger people will not be. Thus most older people will have need to apply for a voucher online in order to be able to vote in person. Rather they will receive guidance as what to take from the official sent to them by election services.

So the effect on will not be neutral between age groups.

Just a small point ahead of a much fuller discussion after 4th May. It has been suggested that the expected reduction in will be neutral between parties rather than to the advantage of the
I believe this to be mistaken because of the combination of differential impact on age groups and differential preferences of the same age groups.

The first is because older voters are much more likely to have the required .

My two cents on :

Have states hold primaries in order of the percentage of in the previous general .

The better the general election turnout, the earlier they get to choose delegates.

Incentivize turnout. Reward .
