A ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) on a rock in the water at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in late May. As the name implies, they hunt by turning over small stones on the shore. Their non-breeding territory are coastal areas all over the world, and they breed along the coast in the arctic.

This is one of my favourite photos. Sure, the composition could definitely be improved but I just love the colours and what it represents to me as a wildlife photographer.

I took this not long after purchasing my camera last year and remember being so excited by this photo I sent off for it to be printed out. After a month of trial and error it was proof that I was improving as a photographer.

If you’ve ever tried to photograph a you’ll know they are quick and like to scurry around so it was great to be able to experience them up close.

The seafoam makes for a great backdrop and contrasts nicely to the Turnstones colours which are highlighted nicely by the evening sun, which is also casting a nice shadow over the bubbles.

Sharing this image with you all got me thinking…What’s an image you took early in your photography life that captured your joy of photography and still evokes those feelings today?

@ptarmiganthony Thankyou. I agree. Hoping we’ll spot this again. Light was dire.

Met a with a bit of bling during this morning’s
The fog & grey skies didn’t help my bridge camera out. Have managed to identify some of the details. The ring appears very worn. Hoping we’ll meet up again tomorrow.

I photographed this Turnstone at Templeton Beach in Co Louth in October. I made sure to get a clear shot of the ring number so that I could find out where it had been caught and ringed. Thanks to the birders in Co Louth I’ve now found out that this bird was ringed in August 2018 in Alert, Nunavut, Canada.

The distance from Alert to Templetown beach is about 3,600km and this is the first sighting of the bird since it was ringed.

Another early outing today & I saw a group of lovely turnstones. These are named this because they flip rocks over in order to find food.

A ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) in non-breeding plumage at Rockaway Beach. As it is a very sandy beach we did not get to see any of the characteristic stone turning behavior.
