YouTube - Turn On! Ep.2 (1969)

2/ Wildly experimental and showcasing some cutting edge technology, its use of very fast editing and synthesizer music must have made it seem positively otherworldly to all the squares and, most likely, a large chunk of the cool kids too.

It frequently feels more like Avant Garde sci-fi than TV comedy. The empty white studio set and in-show computer console have an unnerving THX 1138 quality to them.

1/ Back in 1969 the producers of the hugely popular Laugh In tried to get a more daring and much odder skit-show on the air. The end result, Turn On, has the unusual distinction of effectively being cancelled midway through its inaugural episode, with multiple affiliates refusing to return to the show after the first ad-break.

Now, some kind soul has uploaded it to Youtube and it is quite something.

Today in 1919, Bob Homme is born in Wisconsin. In 1958, he comes to Canada to launch his show, The Friendly Giant, on CBC.
The show remains on the air until 1984 when it is cancelled amid government cutbacks at the CBC.

Fun fact - As of today, we are 1,003 days from the 50th anniversary of the show (Oct 11 1975 / 2025). That's just a bit more than there are episodes of the show (currently 941). By that date, there should be something like 980 total episodes, give or take. Also - the very first episode, George Carlin, played more like a standup show, and the second episode, Paul Simon, was more like a concert. Neither really felt like today's
