Gather around, kids. I remember the #internet when it was black and white, literally. And there was a thing called " #netiquette ".

People, sys admins, tried to maintain structure and civility in the face of the decision by #aol to let the Unwashed Horde have internet access.

It was a failure. Attempts to make utopia are limited by the median i.q. and the population of miscreant sociopaths.

I see #Mastodon intelligentsia trying to stave off indiscretions by the #twittermigration. I hope they're more successful, but if #twitterdies it's going to be chaos here for awhile, unfortunately.

I hope in the long run the distributed server/admin system - literally a sub-network, and non-commercial intent will be self policing. Unlike the free-for-all battlefield of #twitter.

But.....

If #Twitter does fall, and the Most Significant Population moves here, I could see servers eventually needing to be commercial. But it will still be a better place, as long as #algorithmic bias is never implemented. #Bluecheck favoritism, #shadowban , will not be missed. But the simpleton application of citing #freespeech out of context, pretending that anarchy is preferred to having a modicum of social civility, is also why Twitter is failing. Communities exist because they provide a construct for interaction. Anarchy can never be conducive to community, unless you have a juvenile or Ayn Randian idea of society. #Mastodon will succeed if it maintains a balance that is *consistent*.

In essence, if anyone remembers pre-Trump election era Twitter - the *illusion* of what it was ostensibly supposed to be - if Mastodon can maintain a realistic semblance to that, there is no reason it can't supplant the demise of #Hellsite. The other "replacements" imo all have Achilles Heel level faults that will become more obvious in time.

.... but I'm an early adopter and tech optimist, caveat emptor.
