Career-wise, I don't have a permanent position yet and have been using the #Twitter handle as a more permanent marker so people can find me as email addresses change. Instead, I should be using my website, which is, by design, more permanent, and links to everything else.

@alastair Yes. If a handle is not being used, someone else can scoop it up. There have been cases of #impersonation where a scammer scooped up an old #Twitter handle and modeled their account after the person they were impersonating.

Once the infrastructure has failed so badly, no one will care, but I believe that the other cases may be more likely and more detrimental. We're in this odd in-between state with #Twitter. Some think it is dying, but it's really changing into something else. Sometimes its technology is unstable, but these days the platform’s management and policies are less stable.

I have my #Twitter handle on slides, cards, and a host of other items that I've distributed during my academic career.
Once I leave Twitter (or get kicked out) and someone co-opts my username, how do I ensure that visitors know that the current owner of the username is no longer me? How does one manage #impersonation? Ideas?
