I guess we can expect more 'why Mastodon can never replace Twitter' articles soon.

What I can't understand about these articles is that *Twitter was never really that popular*.

There always seems a presumption that it was The Universal Social Media Platform - because of all the journalists seeing their colleagues there - yet it was and remains a relatively small niche that most people either never used, or stopped using after a brief period.

And yes, it had an exaggerated influence, but if that's lost then... well, good. Not only will Mastodon not replace that status, it shouldn't, and society is better off if it doesn't.
