And fund #UBI with an automation tax. Failing to tax automation when you tax workers (aka income tax) acts just like subsidizing companies to automate.

As an aside, it's important to point out that #UBI and other social programs are not anti-capitalist and can work well within a capitalist systems (which is not saying that capitalist systems work well). It's certainly anti-freemarket, but that's a different beast.

If there was ever an argument for Universal basic income, this is it.

“The recipients of the cash transfers did not increase spending on drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, but did increase spending on food, clothes, and rent, according to self-reports. What’s more, they moved into stable housing faster and saved enough money to maintain financial security over the year of follow-up.”

Let's means-test less and give aid and #kindness more.

Also, you realize that even WITH private insurance, health care in the US is not affordable??

I could be in debt $10,000 even WITH my insurance in an emergency, and UBI would absolutely VANISH under that weight of debt.

It doesn't matter how fungible yoyr money is, thousands/tens of thousands of dollars of emergency debt will NULLIFY any UBI you receive.

I agree but would argue that the lack of universal healthcare is not an argument against UBI.

Money is ...well, fungible. UBI that enables me to afford healthcare allows me to spend the remainder on housing & food.

The problem is, in the US, UBI is just more subsidy into for-profit health care businesses **without** some layer of universal healthcare.

In the US, we MUST install universal healthcare BEFORE we do UBI or we're just shoveling money into another monster.

A study on #UniversalBasicIncome #UBI from 2020 is now peer-reviewed and published. The study gave $7500 cash to homeless people in Vancouver and compared their outcome versus a control group. The result was clear:

“The recipients of the cash transfers did not increase spending on drugs, tobacco, and alcohol, but did increase spending on food, clothes, and rent, according to self-reports. What’s more, they moved into stable housing faster and saved enough money to maintain financial security over the year of follow-up.”

Further, each person who moved into stable housing one year faster saves the city over $8000 per year, which makes this program cheaper than existing housing programs.

Universal Basic Income works. It sounds so obvious when you say it out loud, but: giving people cash lifts them out of poverty. We need to do that more.

How many of these studies need to be conducted? It’s the same study, same results, every single time. It doesn’t matter the region, country, or general makeup of the #poverty survivors participating, giving poor people cash without strings attached results in reduced poverty and improved quality of life for the entire community because #povertysurvivors are able to find a place to live, pay their bills, and pursue education, work, etc.
