Grandville, Mon Amour by Bryan Talbot. This is, perhaps, my favourite of the early Grandville stories because, while it does involve a conspiracy (the first three volumes do), the final revelation has major implications for our lead character Inspector LeBrock. I still have the same reservations about the colouring and (more generally) the graphic artwork, but the story once again wins over, with the added bonus of all those nods and winks to other pieces of popular culture. #grpahicnovel #thriller #crime #uchronia

Grandville by Bryan Talbot. I recently reread this book and was surprised at how good it was. To be honest, I seem to remember being surprised at how good it was 15 years ago when I purchased it. In one sense, I shouldn't be surprised. Talbot is a master storyteller, and from Luther Arkwright (which I loved despite not understanding it all) to the Tale of One Bad Rat and more in-between, I've always enjoyed his stories. Grandville is an improbable but very British steampunk uchronia in which Napoleon won the Napoleonic wars. Most of Europe has been the Empire ever since and 80 years on, Britain just gained its independance after a long war. Grandville is the nickname for the capital of the Empire, Paris. Oh, and did I mention that nearly everyone is an anthropomorphic animal? Our lead character is inspector LeBrock, a no-nonsense badger of a policeman, whose affairs always seem to lead him back to Grandville. So why am I still surprised it's so good? Two reasons mainly. I don't normally enjoy anthropomorphic stories, with Usagi Yojimbo being a key exception. Also, I really, really don't like the colouring in these books. It's garish and over the top, not at all what I like. But Grandville overcomes these issues with wit, dynamic and thrilling, pulpy stories, and loads of in-jokes and nods or references to famous stories. So yeah, great fun. #comics #graphicnovel #uchronia #steampunk

Elzevir is a fantastic uchronia (not a realistic one) set in 1948. There has been no world wars, but colonial ones, on Earth, Mars & Venus, colonized planets via strange portals. Maybe a future war of the worlds though, despite the poswerful LoN.
