If the Conservatives had listened in 2020 when they were told about , maybe places like wouldn’t be taking emergency measures now in 2023, displacing over 700 students in their first weeks of uni. The uk government has piled even more grief on this beleaguered generation after they ensured covid gcse and a levels that were harder than the previous generation

I received the 1378 (4) issue of the UEA (Universala Esperanto-Asocio) magazine “Esperanto”. UEA is the largest association to my knowledge. The final page shows the official membership numbers of 2022. Looking at the absolute values of 1411 for China, 869 for Germany, and 975 for Japan, I wondered about the numbers in relation to registered nationals.

I collected all membership numbers of countries with more than 50 members. 50 seems to be an acceptable threshold. Then I extracted the population count from the English Wikipedia. Often the Wikipedia page of a country does not provide census data from 2022. If so, I used the closest approximated values (e.g. those of 2023). In the figure, the x-axis is provided in percent.

In conclusion, Luxemburg, Latvia, Slovenia, Lithuania, and Cuba are countries with a large ratio of UEA members. Even though the absolute numbers of China were leading, in practice the proportion is rather small and Cuba or Burundi win.

As a mum of twins on a low income whose partner is a librarian, I have spent years telling anyone who will listen of the huge social and health value that libraries bring to communities beyond being a building full of books.

It’s great to see that finally financially quantified…and a bit proud it’s in carrying out this research!

Science academics may bring in bigger research grants, but ’s jewels in its brutalist crown were always its environmental science and creative writing courses.

By swinging the axe overwhelmingly at the arts and humanities, their new VC could be creating a death spiral for these courses. So the courses remain for now - but when next year students decide to go elsewhere because of the cuts, I suspect another round of redundancies.

Another of the University of East Anglia () today. I'm still cross that its in a financial mess

UEA has been at the forefront of climate research for over 50 years: this is THE existential threat to humanity, and the Tyndall Centre and the Climatic Research unit at UEA therefore matter to us all

@hugh as an alum I completely agree! Took this photo a few years ago of my old halls, when my daughter was considering an offer - sadly she didn’t bite. Was really looking forward to an excuse to keep visiting

Here's a showing the University of East Anglia, currently in a financial hole, and looking for a new Vice-Chancellor

The system for funding higher education in England is broken. UEA is a good place, and allowing it to be at risk in this way is not healthy. At least that's what I think!

Denys Lasdun’s fabulous campus - the Teaching Wall reflecting east Anglian clouds.
Not sure how I feel about the 2017 addition of Anthony Gormley’s sculpture - but certainly thought provoking

@thomasfuchs Commodore PET in 1979. What got me started was that my Mum worked at the School of Computer Studies at the UEA in Norwich, UK and in the summer I used to be allowed to go into the computer rooms and mess with anything I wanted. I don't suppose that would be allowed nowadays.....

The story of how I got it, and how I fixed one recently is here:

After finishing Carole Angier’s incredible Sebald biography, I took great sustenance from the fact that even Sebald complained about his students. At one point he despaired that one of his UEA undergraduates was surprised to discover that Kafka actually wrote in German.

@KellyEsparzaWrites I did a screenwriting course through with (University of East Anglia) and by the end had a pretty comprehensive plan. I then got sidetracked into debating whether or not I needed to buy a copy of the software. I guess I am not confident on the layout of screenplays. I have bought a few to read though - the first , #1917, and , so maybe I should make those by afternoon reading and get a feel for them.
