🤬 This makes me so angry. As someone who had to pay these fees not so long ago (on TOP of taxes), I already felt they were extortionate. Don't tax immigrants, tax the rich & corporations. Stop pretending there aren't solutions & stop exploiting foreigners https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/jul/16/borderline-racist-rishi-sunak-plan-to-fund-pay-rises-by-hiking-migrant-fees

"Rishi Sunak’s government suffers from the same fatal weakness that Liz Truss revealed by scrapping the 45p tax rate, and that’s failing to realise how bailing out the very wealthy looks to everyone else... imagine how much more could be achieved with a radical rethink of wealth tax – perhaps with proceeds ringfenced to build houses for those who can’t borrow a deposit from the bank of Mum and Dad."

So Jeremy Hunt is trying to tell us that his #budget which is trying to entice retirees back to work will mean "better jobs and opportunities" for young people? 🤔
Wow. They're so used to contradicting themselves that they're not even TRYING to hide it anymore.

Dear The Media:
Can we please stop saying that energy bills will be capped at £2500?
It is still based on typical use, and there is no such thing as typical use. Some will pay more, some will pay less.
It's laziness that leads to people not budgeting properly.
Can't help but think that Jeremy Hunt's budget is a damp squib.
The Tories have long ago run out of ideas. Their plan to fix the problems they've caused is to keep on doing more of what they already did to cause those problems. Like trying to stop a flood by pumping water in the river.
We need a General Election.

If you cut £380m from active travel, but don't claim £6bn by increasing fuel duty, you're not doing it to "balance the books". It's #carbrain ideology that screws over everyone who needs or wants to travel without a car.

I've been working in IT for the last thirty years or so...
... and I'd like to gently remind you, that the the explosive growth of the internet only really happened during that time.
So, I guess what I'm trying to say is... there's a massive coincidence between the time I've been part of the workforce and technology became commercially viable and easy enough to use on a large scale.

"MMT suggests that the government need not borrow from external sources... that interest rates be kept as low as possible to prevent upward shifts of wealth ... acknowledges that interest rates on government debt are set by government choice ...
... that this chosen debt servicing cost is no constraint on spending...
So... if the Chancellor talks about this during the budget today and says it requires austerity he is talking total nonsense."

Well today's The Budget here in the UK from 12 noon.
I wonder what things the Chancellor will punish us with, or possibly make things seem better to take our eye off the real suffering the Tories have put us all through over the past umpteen years.
Teachers, Civil Servants, and London Tube drivers are all on strike today. Coincidence?

This feels oh so relevant at the moment:
"‘Taxation, gentlemen, is very much like dairy farming. The task is to extract the maximum amount of milk with the minimum of moo. And I am afraid to say that these days all I get is moo.’
‘Are you telling us that Ankh-Morpork is bankrupt?’ said Downey.
‘Of course. While, at the same time, full of rich people. I trust they have been spending their good fortune on swords.’" - Terry Pratchett, Jingo

Rachel Reeves failing to differentiate herself stylistically from the Tories. Give a straight answer ffs, it would go a long way.
Plus Labour would look like they had an actual plan rather than the plan being to have a plan. She should be able to answer directly whether under Labour, people would pay more tax.
I thought Charlie on BBC breakfast did a good job of interviewing her, hopefully does the same with the CX
It is usual after a budget (and make no mistake, The Autumn Statement is a full budget) to allow parliament several days of debate. It holding the statement on a Thursday, it was a cynical move of this government to avoid proper parliamentary scrutiny, a fact overlooked my most of the reporting I have heard since. #autumnstatement #ukbudget #Westminster

I will do fairly ok from the budget ,I was expecting back door benefit cuts and maybe a token one percent rise etc.But theres a rise of £35 or so a month for single people). But this isnt tory compassion ,without that they wouldnt be able to afford energy bills let alone food single persons carers allowance is under £350 a month ,and UC around £400 and energy bills are set to rise above that by April
Today, the #UKBudget #AutumnStatement dropped. One thing civil society groups concerned about #poverty had demanded was an immediate inflation-linked increase to social security support. The #UK Chancellor agreed to that increase, but not until April. And even in April, it won't address the frankly inadequate level of social security support ... we need an urgent review of the sufficiency of social security support to ensure people have a dignified, decent standard of living. #UKPolitics
