Starmer vs Khan on Brexit.

(Disclosure: I’m in Sadiq Khan’s corner on this topic. And I don’t believe that Keir Starmer is the right leader for Labour. Is he proper Labour anyway?)

Keir Starmer rules out “bringing back free movement of people and arguing there is “no case” for rejoining the EU’s single market and insists [that] Labour would fix the gaps in the Government’s Brexit deal to then ‘make Brexit work’ “

London Mayor Sadiq Khan will argue, in a speech this evening, for a shift away from the current “unnecessarily hardline version” of Brexit towards greater alignment with Europe.

“I simply can’t keep quiet about the immense damage Brexit is doing”.

(If you’re still using the other social media platform, @LBC has a good clip today of James O’Brien addressing this; the clip hasn’t yet gone up onto their website nor onto YouTube).

I wonder how much money is being put into this endeavour, both publicly and privately/secretly.

I find it gross, and can think of much better use for the money at the moment in the UK.

It seems to be a slap in the face for the millions of people who are suffering desperately currently in the UK, people who can’t afford to use electricity/gas because they can’t afford the bills, employees of the NHS who are viciously underpaid, people who are ill and need to be in a hospital but are instead near the bottom of a vast waiting list or unable to get an ambulance or left in a long queue outside the hospitals and people whose welfare benefits are not enough to live on, and I could go on for ever.

The Guardian

In a downbeat assessment on the eve of the chancellor’s autumn statement, the Bank’s governor told MPs on the Commons Treasury committee: “I’m afraid it’s not a good story.”

Asked whether Brexit was contributing to the country’s underperformance, he said that “there is an effect” from leaving the EU, including a “long-run downshift” in the level of productivity
