I love pickled onions. I just crunched the best pickled onions I've ever tasted. I can hardly believe I pickled them myself after years of searching for fresh pearl/boiler onions and resigning myself to ruinously expensive store-bought (when I can even find them in California). Finally found little onions at a local Persian grocer and tried a likely recipe (Sarson's). Pickled onion heaven. #ukFood #pickling #comfortFood

Time for another supermarket Hot Cross Bun, this time it's the Deluxe Apple and Cinnamon Hot Cross Bun from Lidl (of the glorious pastry aisle).

Mum's score is 8/10 - nice bun, good flavour, you can actually taste the cinnamon, but not enough apple and a wonky design

I give it an 8/10 too - nice amount of apple, orange infused sultanas and the cinnamon isn't hiding.

Generous berries and sweet flavour, but zero spice. Nice glaze. 7/10 from me. Too sweet

I'm more of a cinnamon fan so my jury is still open...

It sounds good,but I strongly suspect its just a cover up so people dont notice that

Sandwich tales - an update

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I reached adulthood peak with a sandwich toaster

This time we toasted tortilla wraps - cooked slices of ham, grated cheddar cheese, and leftover pesto.

Buttered the grill and the top of the tortilla so it had a nice colour and flavour!

They still can't quite bring themselves to say the B word out loud, but there's an article on the BBC news website that points out how the UK is being disproportionately affected by veg shortages in Europe:

As Spanish and Moroccan produce starts increasing again, growers in those countries are more likely to sell to buyers closer to home, he added.

"You've got more fuel costs on a four-day trip to the UK and there are additional fees to get it through the border," he said, adding that international growers are more likely to get a higher price for their goods in other countries.

"They can simply get a better price in Europe for less hassle," he said. "The UK is such a small market for Spanish and Moroccan produce. Who are they going to look after first?"

Pleasantly surprised with our recent Gousto meals

Although the 10 minute target can only be met by a cooking ninja, the Lemon Butter Basa was delicious and pretty simple.

The Cheesy Courgette Fritters with bacon and eggs were tasty but not as crispy as I would have liked. I'll adjust that recipe if I remake it.

The Lancashire Hotpot was perfect. Always needs longer for the potatoes to crisp but worth the wait.
