I should add that there is a further twist to this particular tale. Until the current budget the #UK assumed a notional individual pension pot for #definedbenefit schemes - like the #NHS. This was calculated using an estimate for annuity rates. Annuity rates depend both on #LifeExpectancy and #InterestRates. Increasing life expectancy reduces the annuity rate as does reducing interest rates - the result is to put up the value of the pension pot.

It has been known for a while that previous projections of increasing #lifeexpectancy in the #UK
were not justified by the evidence. #Actuaries had reached this conclusion even before #Covid19.

So the #Government position on this was becoming untenable. As has been seen over #NorthernIreland the present lot in charge seem to understand when and how to retreat.

This makes for better government but one more difficult for opposition parties to cope with!

At last they caught up with the actuaries - the trend has been clear since the early 2010 - I wonder why!
